Hi Sergio: I don't know how I received your message, but.........I'll give you a bit of information. My father was born in Calabria, also. Calabria as you know is a large "province" with many cities, towns & villages, each with it's own Commune Office. Hopefully you will get some answers from others more knowledgeable than myself. I had my father's Birth Certificate, which he sent for from the Town of Mammola, so I had that information when I visited in 2001. My grandfather was born in the next town, but unfortunately there was a fire years before so all his records were destroyed. I suggest you start with any information you have regarding your Father, and Grandfather. Whenever they came to Brazil (probably by ship?)........records were kept. Whatever Government Department in Brazil recorded immigrants from Italy will probably still have copies of the records. They are called SHIPS MANIFESTS........... every Country kept track of people on the ship and where they came from. I suggest that would be a good place to start, as it will tell you what Town or City in Calabria they came from, and once you know that, you can look up that City/town. If you read & write in Italian (which I don't)......you will be able to locate the Commune Office & hopefully write them a letter (or e-mail) to get more information. Good Luck!! While I am not new to research, I am new to research in Italy, and as such unfamiliar with the area. I have found rootsweb lists to be valuable in my own research, and hope for the same as I help a friend research his family. I have used FHL library before, and would also welcome any sites, etc, that would help locate either civil or church records. Declaration of Intention for citizenship filed in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, states:Antonio Tropea, b 21 Oct 1897, Nicastro, Italy. Emigrated from port of Naples, via Batavia 20 March 1910 I have found US records and passenger lists that help to verify this, but am hoping to find more of the family in Italy.
