McVey & Mabel [McVEY] Woodall) Part of my family settled in the Verden area well before 1900. My GG grandaddy on one side was Black Beaver, chief of the Delaware tribe. His daughter, Lucy, married my G granddaddy, Elihu Burgin Osburn. Elihu changed the spelling of Osburn to Osborn. He was from Ohio and was in the Union Army during that terrible Civil War. He was killed by Native Americans when they were on the war path and his wife, Lucy, 100% Delaware, told him not to try and stop them. He was friends with them and didn't understand that they were hopped up to go out and kill white people. They were sorry, after the fact. Long story. His son, my granddaddy, Jonathan Richard Osborn, changed the spelling from Osborn to Osborne. This obit, and other McVey obits can be viewed on this site. Just put in the McVey name and do a search. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ok/GradyObits The Verden News December 12, 1941 John C. McVey was born November 16, 1857 in Knox County, Kentucky and passed away December 7, 1941 at the home of his son, John B. McVey near Anadarko, Oklahoma at the age of 84 years and 21 days. Brother McVey was united in marriage to Amelia Jane Vaughn in 1880 at Jellico, Tennessee. To this union was born six sons: Dr. George M.; Everet C.; Grover C.; Albert S.; Richard C.; and John B. and Everet C. preceded him in death in 1912 and his wife preceded him in death in 1930. Brother McVey moved to Oklahoma with his family in the year 1907 and located in Verden, at which place he has made his home since. He joined the Masonic Lodge in Williamsburg, Ky. and was an honorary member of the Verden Lodge at the time of his death. Brother McVey was a member of the First Baptist church of Verden. He has been a member of the Missionary Baptist church for more than fifty years. He leaves to mourn his departure five sons, ten grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. I am in email touch with a McVey in Verden and we've shared a lot of information. Actually, this man owns the land where once my GG granduncle, William Garrard WILLIAMS, had the famous Half Moon Ranch. I will be more than happy to email this man to see if he'd like to email with you! So, let us hear from you! This, to me, is amazing! Hope we find more Verden connections. I think I'm related to just about everyone who is still living in that tiny place. Best, Sandi Carter
