    1. [IT-INDIAN] Re: IT-INDIAN-D Digest V04 #4
    2. I have seen no other information that specifies the father of Nanyehi....it is understood that her mother was Tame Doe, sister of Attakullakulla (Ata'gal'kula). Her father is said to have been a trader by some, but is not named in other accounts. After her first husband Kingfisher was killed, she later married Bryant Ward in the Cherokee manner and had children with him in addition to the two she had with Kingfisher. Bryant Ward later left the Cherokee country and returned to South Carolina, where he had a white wife and family. Nanyehi and her children visited there often and were welcomed, according to published reports. Sometimes people with a similar name have an oral tradition that connects them to a famous person without any more evidence than the shared surname; I do not know if that is the case here. A web search will return a lot of webpages in Nanyehi's honor. Sty yu, Stiwi

    1. [IT-INDIAN] Nancy Ward in Spartenburg Co., SC
    2. Glee
    3. Found this statement on the Spartanburg Co., SC web site. I do not believe that this true. Can someone tell me if they ever heard of this before or if there is any proof of this statement. I descend out of Nancy Ward and have always believed her to be a full blood and this would make her a half blood. Glee "There were a few families that came directly from Europe to Spartanburg Co. SC and settled in the Tyger River area. Francis and Edmond Ward, younger sons of Sir Francis Ward of Ireland, came directly to this area. Francis married Tame Doe who was the sister of Chief Oconostota. After he was banished from the Cherokee Nation, he married another Ward, assumedly the widow of his brother, Edmund. Nancy Ward, the daughter of Francis and Tame Doe married Lt. Bryant Ward, nephew of Francis Ward. Nancy and Francis both owned property along the Tyger River in Spartanburg County. Samuel Cathcart (var. Kithcart), Alexander and Annie McRoro Alexander, Isaac Crow were other Irish settlers on the Tyger River."

    2. Janet K. Theberge
    3. Oh, you are so kind!! Thanks so much for all your help. I have gotten a bit of information on one of my Self ladies, Jane Self who married 1st William Graham - 2nd James Hester. The following information came in an email from Eva Bush, a descendant of my Jane Self's sister. Jane Self had a sister, Mary Ann Self. Mary Ann Self married William B. Ellison. They had a daughter, Mary Ann Josephine "Mollie" Ellison. Mollie Ellison, the daughter of Mary Ann Self is the one in the census with Robert F. Hester. She would be the niece of Jane Self and that would also make her Jane's daughter-in-law. Robert and Mollie would be cousins! In other words, Mary Ann "Polly", had a daughter Mary Ann, who had a daughter Mary Ann "Mollie". The parents of Jane & Mary Ann are Isaac Self born abt 1813/1815 and Mary Ann "Polly" (maiden name not known). They appeared on the 8-8-1870 Dallas County, Texas census, Precinct 3. Isaac Self, 57, m, w, Farmer, Tenn Polly Self, 49, f, w, Keeping house, Mississippi Emaline Self, 22, f, w, Ark Luticia Self, 18, f, w, Ark Mary Self, 16, f, w, Ark Nathan Self, 13, m, 2, Ark Delila Self, 10, f, w, Ark Nancy Self, 3, F, W, Texas Johnie Graham, 24, f, w, Ark Allen Graham, 1, m, w, Texas W. T. Crocker, 35, m, w, Alabama Margaret Crocker, 19, f, w, Ark James H. Crocker, 1, m, w, Texas Isaac was on the 1880 Lee County, Texas census, Precinct 4. Isaac Self, w, m, 65, Alabama Mary Ann Self, wife, 61, TN Deliah Self, daughter, 17, Arkansas Nancy V. Self, daughter, 11, Texas T. M. Thompson, granddaughter, 2, TX I know these have to be the same people, but their ages calculate different and Isaac and Polly are showing being born in different states. Jane's sister Margaret Crocker was with her husband Wiley Crocker also in the 1880 Lee County, Texas census. So I know this Isaac and Mary Ann Self have to be the same ones as the Isaac and Polly on the 1870 census in Dallas. Mary Ann Self was born in Arkansas on 11-21-1854. She died on January 5, 1892 in Mason County, Texas. She is buried in the Ellison Family Cemetery in Mason County, Texas. She married William B. Ellison on 1-13-1872 in Bexar County, Texas. William was born 8-5-1854 in Texas, died 1-19-1892 in Mason County, Texas and is buried in the Ellison Family Cemetery. A family story that a descendant recently told me has that William left for Fort Worth to pick up a wagon load of furniture, when Mary Ann became ill with the flu. One of the boys went after him and William rode back on a horse only to find Mary Ann had already died. He was so grief stricken he drank until he died 2 weeks later leaving behind a young family. Their children were: 1. William Isaac Ellison born 6-15-1873, died 5-17-1910 in Pontiotoc, Mason County, buried in Ellison Cemetery. (Since his middle name is Isaac, I felt comfortable in looking for an Isaac Self when researching Mary Ann Self - the Mary Ann Self age 16 in the Dallas County 1870 census matches the same age as my Mary Ann) 2. Claiton M. Ellison, born 7-1876 (still researching him) 3. Nathaniel Thomas Ellison, born 1-15-1879 in Mason County, died 5-17-1939 in McCulloch County. (This is my great-grandfather who probably went to live with his grandmother, Kizzie Ellison, after his parent's died.) 4. George Washington "Wash" Ellison, born 8-16-1881 in Mason County, died 1-1-1940 in McCulloch County, buried in the Ellison Cemetery. 5. Mary Ann Josephine "Molly" Ellison, born 1-23-1884 in Mason County, died 9-8-1970 in Mason, County. Resided in Uvalde until she went to a nursing home in Mason. She is buried in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Brady. Family has that she was passed around after her parents died and she married as soon as she could. Had to work hard most of her life as her first husband abandoned her and their 3 children. 6. John Ellison, born 3-19-1886 in Mason County, died 4-1-1930 in McCulloch County, says to be buried in Mason County, but I haven't found the gravesite. The census above showed Ada living in the household with Robert and Mary Ann. Mollie had a daughter, Mary Alma Thompson. So I know for sure now that I am on the right track! The lady who sent me this information was Eva Bush. She says: The Johnie Self on the 1870 census, threw me for a while. But tracing Allen led me to searching for an Allen Graham born about 1869. That's when I found your post-em! I could find no other Allen Graham around that age on any census, but the Isaac Self household. I'm assuming Johnie and Jane are the same person since Allen Graham is the link. We all know how inaccurate the information on the census records can be. It depends on who is giving the info. The info can even come from a neighbor, so I only use them as clues. I really believe that the Self's migrated through Arkansas to Texas. Every census on my Mary Ann Self Ellison has that she was born in Arkansas, so I feel Jane was born there too since she was older. It appears they came to Texas after 1860 and before 1867. Now if I could just come up with some information about Daisy Self who married Paul Moody!!!! Thanks again, so very much, Janet Graham Theberge ----- Original Message ----- From: <SandKatC@aol.com> To: <IT-INDIAN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, January 02, 2004 7:46 PM Subject: Fwd: {not a subscriber} Re: [IT-INDIAN] Researching names Cloud, Moody > > In a message dated 1/2/04 1:10:45, s3js@cox.net writes: > > << Hi, Janet. 2. Wado for sharing this, Dody; it is ironic that Dawes should write these sympathetic words, yet be the author of the Dawes Act which extinguished tribal national governments and alloted the land, yielding huge "surpluses" that were then opened to white settlement, further eroding tribal sovereignty and lands. It is good to see an acknowledgement of US duplicity by one of their own Congressmen. Sty yu, Stiwi

    1. [IT-INDIAN] Epidemics
    2. In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, this might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing, as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. Some of the major epidemics in the United States are listed below: 1657 Boston Measles 1687 Boston Measles 1690 New York Yellow Fever 1713 Boston Measles 1729 Boston Measles 1732-3 Worldwide Influenza 1738 South Carolina Smallpox 1739-40 Boston Measles 1747 CT,NY,PA,SC Measles 1759 N.
