Hi All: For those of you who celebrate Easter, I sure hope you had a good day with family, and/or friends. If you don't celebrate Easter, still, I hope you had the same good heartwarming day. It's all about loving and caring on any day we can get together and share a good meal. Best, Sandi Carter

Don't have any help for you on your grandmother Gayla but am very interested in your WELDON family. I've been researching my family for years and have not been able to go any father back than my ggrand father in 1860 and maybe 1850. Any way from 1860 to sometime in the 1880's they lived in Pulaski County, AR. In the 1880's they relocated to Yell County, AR. My ggrandmother Margaret A MULLIGAN WELDON was Irish. Her parents was born in Ireland. My ggrandfather John W. WELDON according to the 1860, 70, and 80 census was from GA. According to oral history he was 1/4 Cherokee, but I've never proved that. I believe he was born in AR. and his parents was from TN. but the census reports confuse me. To make a long story short where is your WELDON family from? Hi McVey Researchers: Below is the obit for John C. McVey who went to Verden, OK from KY. I hope this will help with your family and provide a link. Best, Sandi Carter The Verden News December 12, 1941 John C. McVey was born November 16, 1857 in Knox County, Kentucky and passed away December 7, 1941 at the home of his son, John B. Hello list I am searching for my ancestors named Davis, McClure, Potes. My great-grandfather Tandy Walker Davis keeps hiding from me -- he was in south-central Chickasaw Nation when he died (1880s) near Healdton, now in Carther County, OK. Tandy fathered two children by his first wife (that I know of, anyway) in the early 1870s, Emma (Davis) Potes and John Thomas Davis, and after his first wife's death, he married her sister and fathered a third child, Charles Wesley Davis, my grandfather. Emma told her son that she was born near Jim Town on Wilson Creek (that would be in Love County now). I don't know the names of either of Tandy's wives. The children of these marriages were 1/8 Chickasaw Indian according to the oral family history. After Tandy's death, his second wife married Dick Mixon and that marriage produced three more children. > From: <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Date: 4/5/01 10:32:10 PM > Subject: [IT-INDIAN] NEW PEOPLE ON THE LIST > > Hi All: > > Since we are getting more new people on the IT-INDIAN and IT-WHITE lists, > would you all mind posting your "brick wall" people and family surnames. Hi all! Here's the wall I've ran into. My grandfather John Alexander Walton was born 9-7-1889 in Valliant, McCurtain Co, Ok. Father Alfred Walton born nodate in the US, mother Martha Thompson born nodate in Tx. A relative told me that John had 3 siblings: Thomas Jefferson, Joseph Baxter and Mattie Walton. I'm trying to find whatever I can on his parents, and siblings. I really don't know if my Waltons are Native American or perhaps mixed, or white. I've read that there were more intruders in Indian Territory around 1890 than there were Indians, so I suppose it could go either way. I do know that John ended up working for the railroad in TX; perhaps his father did too, in Ok. Or perhaps not. I've checked the 1900, 1910 and 1920 Soundex indexes for Ok and Tx, and the end section of the 1860 AR census which lists whites living in Indian Territory. No sign of any of them, except for the Jeff Davis, Tx 1920 census, which lists John and his wife and 3 children. I've also checked the Dawes rolls, with no luck, although I did see where a Martha Thompson had applied. Not sure if she's the right one or not. Sorry to be so long winded. Guess I'm looking for any advice as to what to try next. And of course if anyone has anything on my Waltons, please do tell. Thanks for any help you can give, Ray W Shoemaker _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com
Well folks I don't have a brick wall. I have been over it and they are not there. I think Andrew Gibson born about 1800 came and dropped a kid off named Arthur Bradley Gibson born about 1830 somewhere in KY and just disappeared. Arthur Bradley showed up with a wife and children in Texas on the 1870 and 1880 census' in Wise County, TX. Arthur Bradley married Francis Levenia Smithhart about 1857 and produced 4 children in Bosque County, TX. Their children said so. Those children were Joseph Silas born about 1857, My great-grandfather James L.L. (Elonza(o)) born 1861, Mary Alice born 1862-3, and Clinton Alexander born 1864. The other children were born in Wise county. Not in order. Martha Francis, Margaret (Maggie) Delena, Forrest, Bradley jr., Jesse Munroe, and Elmore Leeance. Many of these children died young. Arthur Bradley died June 6, 1885 in TX. Francis Levenia married again to Thomas Bassette ?. Francis Levenia lived in Okfuskee county, IT in 1897 and applied for Citizenship to the Cherokee Tribe but was denied. She died in 1899 ?. My Great-grandfather James L.L. married Mary Elizabeth Crow born 1864 in GA, lived in Grayson County, TX. My Grandmother was born 1883 in Decatur, Wise County, TX. This family moved to Tussey, IT about 1887. They had two sons Beecher and Eldredge then James L.L. died in 1891 a few months before the expected child Ethel was born. Maggie Delena married John McChesney Dennis in Gainesville, TX in 1887. Mary Alice married J.I. Turner in Gainesville, TX in 1887. J.I. Turner died ? and Alice married a Arendale and lived near McAlester in 1897. Maggie lived around Wewoka in 1897. Clinton Alexander. his son Joe Allison, and his brother Elmore Leeance also applied for Cherokee Citizenship with their mother but was denied. Clinton was murdered in Marlow, OK in 1930. His son Joe died of a heart attack about 1950 in Duncan, OK. Elmore was to have moved to Mena, AR. I have some personal Information for some of these Gibson's and I have some older pictures, otherwise you now know almost as much about my Gibson Ancestor's as I do. I have searched every where to great lengths and have found very little. I hope someone will recognise a name that connects and let me know. It has been mentioned that the Gibson's were in LA for a time. I cannot find a connection for Andrew with a son Arthur Bradley in LA. Francis Levenia was born 1839 in Warren County, MS to parents James W. Smithhart and Cornelia Sevier, daughter of Mary or Nancy Daniel. James died, Cornelia married Jacob Harrison, they, her first five children and three children by Jacob, were on the 1850 census in Shelby county, TX. Later they were located in McLennan county, TX. Cornelia supposedly died in Joshua, TX about 1870 or a bit later. Thank you all for reading my letter. I hope even if I can't get helped that I have helped some one else. Armenta Akers, McWethey
No, it doesn't sound like a match BUT Marion isn't THAT common of a name (although Johnson IS!) and I've noticed in this family that lots of nephews and nieces are named after aunts and uncles, so I would love to have your family tree. Hi Bonnie. Here is the basic info. I hope something rings a bell with you! My family speculates that his brother/sisters must have left AL, because there is not much trace of them, except Christopher Bullard Johnson, who went to Texas. Thanks so much. Teresa Thomas Marion Johnson, born AL (appears IT) June 19, 1828. He died May 17, 1896 in Hokes Bluff AL. He married Susannah Jane Griffith, born July 4, 1831 in Dekalb Co GA. She died Feb. 13, 1878. I can find very little on her, although I think her father was William Vardamond Griffith and her mother may have been Phebe Farlin. (both born in GA....and some speculation they were Creek). The Johnsons were Cherokee, and intermarried with several well known Cherokee families, i.e. the Vanns, Sansoms, Hopkins, etc. I have sketchy info on Thomas Marion's mother....perhaps named Mary and born SC. But not much else. I would love to find his parents, migration, or more info on her, or any "cousins" that I haven't already found! Also, any info on siblings would be great. I have some on Christopher Bullard Johnson, but that's it. I also have the following POSSIBLE siblings for Thomas Marion Johnson: Christopher Bullard Johnson (this one is for sure....he later migrated to Texas and died there) Benjamin Johnson Elijah Johnson John Johnson Joseph Johnson Lafayette Johnson Moses Johnson Eliza Johnson I am NOT SURE about any siblings, but this is info I've received from other descendants who are having a tough time as well! The children of Thomas Marion and Susannah Jane were: (this is well documented) George Vardamond Johnson b. Sept. 4, 1849 married Nancy Jane Hopkins (who marched the Trail then rode home to marry him) He is buried in Hokes Bluff Mary Ann Phobe Johnson b 9 Mar 1871 married Marion Franklin Pike, died Hokes Bluff Frances Dorcas Johnson b 9 nov 1854 married James Eli Handy, died Hokes Bluff (Hokes Bluff must be nice...they never left!) Nancy Caroline Johnson b 25 Mar 1856, married Wm Newton Walden, buried Lander's cemetary Martha Eveline Johnson b 18 Feb 1858 married James Shelly Reeves, buried New Bethel cemetary Thomas Lafayette Johnson, b 12 Apr 1860, married Mary Jane Hancock Henrietta Jane Johnson, b 8 Apr 1862 never married Louisa Bullard Johnson b 17 Apr 1864 married Felix Andrew (Bud) Mitchell died Hokes Bluff Sarah Catherine Johnson b 18 Mar 1866 married Richard Hardy buried New Bethel Julia Victoria Johnson b 23 Apr 1868 married Jeremiah M LaFollette buried New Bethel Jefferson Alford Johnson b 26 Apr 1870 married Anna Johnson buried Piedmont Jo Ella Johnson b 7 Dec 1873 married Wm. Macon Lane buried New Bethel Margaret Florence Johnson (my great grandmother) bor Apr 17, 1875 married Robert Lee Shortnacy, died Alabama All were born in AL, mostly Hokes Bluff, which I think is Etowah County. I have 3 Dawes packets which match on names and birth dates, but spouses are different, so not really a match. ----- Original Message ----- From: frank cook <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 09, 2001 10:32 AM Subject: Re: [IT-INDIAN] Here's a JOHNSON/GRIFFITH brick wall > Can you give me the dates on Marion Johnson, and where > he died?? > > Bonnie > > -----Original Message----- > From: teresa angle <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] <[email protected]> > Date: Monday, April 09, 2001 8:02 AM > Subject: Re: [IT-INDIAN] Here's a JOHNSON/GRIFFITH brick wall > > > >Yes, I think you are right. Teresa. Why I was asking, my sister's father-in-law was a Marion Johnson, if I remember correctly. He died long time ago in CA so do not think he connects to your JOHNSONs. He married his wife was ROsa Belle but cannot remember her maiden name. They married in OK. Think they were both born and raised either in OK or AR. Couldn't say for sure, but I've also got Johnsons in my surname list, & your's just may have wandered from OK into MO., & there were quite a # of them in the Howard/Saline Co areas. Might no hurt to check it out. This brick wall is dedicated to my mother, Elsie (Downey) Wright, b. Jul 25, 1898, d. Apr 23, 1995, who was 1/16th indian. This means that the indian is to be found as the parent of either George W Downey or of his wife, Sycena Polly. Several descendents are pursuing the line; all are at the same wall. One family story is that whomever married the indian was ostracized by the rest of the family, and thus, little is known. Another family story is that the Downey parents died very early, leaving the children as orphans. Another theory is that Sycena Polly was the daughter of a "Chief Polly". Late in her life, Ida (Wooderson) Downey said that the indian in her husband's family were in Oklahoma. Here is the known line: George W. Downey, b. 1800 in Ky, m. Sycena, alt. sp. Scycena Polly, b. Mar 17, 1796 in Ky. Children: Polley Downey, b. Jun 7, 1817 Elizabeth Downey, b. Sep 15, 1820 Crysteene Downey, b. Feb 29, 1824 John Downey, B. Jun 16, 1825, d. Oct 7, 1903, m. Irena McGowan, b. Oct 15, 1839, d. Sep 22, 1901 Henry Downey, b. Sep 22, 1827 James Asbrock Downey, b. Dec 6, 1829, m. (1) Julia Lillard, (2) Milissa Hanks George Michael Downey, b. Jun 4, 1831 William Seward Downey, . b. Jan 19, 1833. d. Mar 24. 1922, m. May 6, 1853, Anner Potter, b. Dec 20, 1835, d. Dec 28, 1903 Samuel Downey, b. Sep 2, 1836, m. Jane (unknown) Charles W. Downey, b. Nov 13, 1837, d. May 17, 1915, m. Jun 4, 1864, Martha Moore Thomas, b. Sep 1, 1842, d. Jun 15, 1900. (Elsie Downey's grand- parents. Their son, John Franklin b. Feb 21, 1872, d. Feb 8, 1945, m. Ida Wooderson, b. Dec 22, 1874, d. Apr 13, 1960) Sycena Catherine Downey, b. Jul 9, 1842 I found 3 Pollys in Major Blue's Detachment in the War of 1812, but no records of them in National Archives. Thanks in advance for any help.
