Seeking Information about Martha Armstrong Lucas
Sandi, I didn't quite understand this or what to do with it. I did, however, click on the rootsweb address and left a message asking about the Allens. I still can't seem to get anywhere there. You know, it may turn out that they were Western Cherokee, do you? Wouldn't that be a dissapointment. Talk to you later. Thanks for thinking of me. >From Ancestry's Daily News: IN THE NEWS ONLINE: USENET ARCHIVES BACK ONLINE =============================================== The search engine Google.com (http://groups.google.com/) has reposted over 650 million messages posted to Usenet dating back to the mid- 1990s. For more information, see: http://www.ecommercetimes.com/perl/story/9320.html You didn't miss them while they were gone, you say? Well, then, you have been missing out on a LOT of fascinating genealogy material. When the Internet was in its infancy, before the birth of the World Wide Web even, there was Usenet. These days, sadly, many ISPs don't even run a news server, and many folks have only accessed the Usenet newsgroups via Deja, or through the gatewayed/mirrored Rootsweb lists. Unfortunately, the auto-moderator for the Surnames lists has been broken for a long time, and is not yet fixed, so the list method of access was closed, and since Deja was sold to Google.com, there wasn't even any web access left. [Of course, you can still search the list Archives here at Rootsweb, http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=SURNAMES-L ] But that has all changed, and you can now search all of Usenet, or only selected parts, with the wonderful Google search engine. Try it, you'll like it! It might even inspire you to fire up your news reader, and access Usenet directly. It's a wild and wooley, anarchic and wonderful place!
Janey, You might try the Pittsburg Co. Gen and Hist. Society in McAlester. They do free look-ups and will take requests by email. You can get there by going to www.usgenweb.com, then OK or IT, then Pittsburg Co., then on that page there will be a link. They are great people there and are more than willing to help! Hello All, I have recently subscribed to this mailing list in hopes of finding and sharing information while I am doing my family Genealogy. Currently I am working mostly on my husband's Park/Parks family line. I found an index of the Indian Pioneer Papers online which showed that an interview had been done with a Samuel Park at McAlester OK. I am trying to get out of having to drive 140 mi round trip to the nearest place that I know to have the Papers on Microfilm. I have trouble reading Microfilm due to my dyslexia, and haven't found it in hard copy or on microfisch except at the OU Library. If someone out there has photocopied this interview already I would appreciate it if you could give me some information on who this man was. He could be my husband's great uncle or his grandfather, or a member of a different branch all together with me not having access to his vitals from the index. Any help that anyone could give me would be greatly appreciated. I was Born a Blakley, and am researching family names of : Allen Beavers Bicknell Blakley/Blakely/Blakeley 3 Campbell lines 2 Davis lines Harris Heffington 2 Kennedy lines McAdams McGill Smith Stephenson/Steaverson Tolbert Tomlinson Turnbull Wheeler and a few others that are connected, Almost all were at least some Indian, mostly Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, or other, but most during a certin time period weren't usually listed as Indian untill they migrated here to Oklahoma where it was more socially acceptable. Anyone interested in what I have, or interested in sharing with me what they have on any of these family lines can contact me through my email or on this or other mailing lists. Thanks sincerely for your time, it is so precious to us all. Hi: This is being sent to the lists I run and to others in my personal email addy book. I want you ALL to not open an attachment sent to you in personal email before you check with the sender to see if he/she did send it. Why? I had a number of private emails today from a cousin. Each had an attachment. What was said was "Take a look to the attachment" and each one was 13 K. I finally emailed my cousin to see if she was sending them as each one was different but all seem to have been in a .pif format. She hadn't sent one and found out that it was a KAK worm that was attaching to her emails and also, she had a lot of email from her to her! SO, please be VERY careful when opening personal email. Always question the attachment. Those who receive email from Rootsweb lists don't have to worry as no attachments or HTMLs get through. Best, Sandi Carter
