I am searching the surname Stansberry from near Oklahoma City. My grandfather was raised on an indian reservation as the story goes. I have been told that his moccasins are from the Kiowa/Apachee tribe. Does anyone have any info on that name? crosson ----- Original Message ----- From: Gene Philips To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, May 24, 2001 5:42 PM Subject: Re: [IT-INDIAN] BAREFOOT At 11:11 PM 05/23/2001 -0400, you wrote: >Gene: > >That is interesting as the man I'm trying to help with his BAREFOOT family >lives in CO and his first name is Mel. Boy you got that right, Just on my dads side his great grandfather was half Cherokee indian and half black and swedish in there some where. his mother's people were seneca, english and black dutch. all of my mothers roots that we know of were white. So what does that make me. I have to go to a tanning bed if I want to have a tan. But we do the native American Pow-wow thing and love it. My heart is pure Native American. I loved your statement. Do anyone know anything about the Bushyhead family that is in OK. Was told that the Bulter family i have is related to them somehow? [email protected]
Sandi: I read them as he publishes. His work is so interesting. We pass them through the family too. :-) Sue
I was so upset when I heard that "Lost Wages" LOL was having fits over the casinos here in California taking money away from them. HELLO? Just how much does Vegas rake in compared to, say, the casino at Santa Ynez? Yep, that's right, the government want to bleed our people to death! Talk about greedy! I am so proud of our people who are doing well and pray more and more will in the days to come. Now, how about some genealogy Folks? Tee hee. Oh, say, is anyone researching the BAREFOOT surname of people who were/are around Chickasha, Grady CO, OK? Wado, Sandi

I really feel that I've learned a lot in his books beside being well entertained. Tony presents our people in a very dignified way. Wado, Sandi
that was a cute one! [email protected]
I totally agree with you. They were here first and the white man felt the need to take what was their's and then treat them like they were trash! Took the land from them and claimed it as thiers! Here in CA the Indians are making something of themselves. Many of the people have housing now with electric and plumbing something they didn't have as early as five years ago. Did the goverment care heck no ( trying to be nice)! But when they came up with the bingo and gambling halls here the goverment all of sudden showed an interest in them! Only because Las Vegas was mad because they were loosing business to them! And the fact that the goverment can't tax the Indians so they have all of this money coming in and the goverment can't touch them! But needless to say we have won and we still have them and the goverment can kiss where the sun don't shine! [email protected]
When NASA was preparing for the Apollo project, they did some astronaut training on a Navajo Indian reservation. One day, a Navajo elder and his son were herding sheep and came across the space crew. The old man, who only spoke Navajo, asked a question, which his son translated. "What are the guys in the big suits doing?" A member of the crew said they were practising for their trip to the moon. The old man got really excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts. Recognizing a promotional opportunity for the spin-doctors, the NASA folks found a tape recorder. After the old man recorded his message, they asked the son to translate. He refused. So the NASA reps brought the tape to the reservation, where the rest of the tribe listened and laughed, but refused to translate the elder's message to the moon. Finally, NASA called in an official government translator... He reported that the moon message said, "Watch out for these guys; they've come to steal your land."
Regarding Deannie's post about races, I consulted my friend who is an Elder with the Cherokee tribe and this is what he said - " . . . I disagree totally. The four sacred colors of Native Americans (Black,Yellow,White,Red), have been around for a long time even before the so called white man and or spanish,(Texas,California, etc.) Many priests and explorers who were the first contacts made entries acknowledging that the native people referred to these people as being created by the creator, even though this was their first contact with others." D.Richard Nicholson PH.D, (Ret) Native American Studies Regarding first contact . . . There are some interesting books with information about the tribes and their early history. One I recently found that explained things quite well was a book about the Stockbridge Indians in N.Y. This book is about Christianized Indians beginning in the late 1600's through the time that they were moved to Wisconsin. The first chapter puts things down in such a way as to understand the First People easier than any other history I have read. It takes a lot of reading to get the full picture on this by other means.
