Hi All: I feel the below is useful for researchers so am sharing what Mike wrote. Please feel free to use it on your mailing lists or web pages if you deem it appropriate. Often, in genealogy, questions related to copyright arise. For several years, I've had a website where I tried to answer many of those questions and I've actively participated in the discussions on the copyright-l mailing list at RootsWeb. More recently, I've been writing articles based on what I've learned about copyright, which I am also posting online. My most recent article is intended to apply some basics of copyright to genealogy related issues. "Copyright Fundamentals for Genealogy," was specifically written to grant free reprint and redistribution rights. It is located at: http://www.stellar-one.com/copyright_concepts/fundamentals_gene.htm . Please feel free to use the article for any genealogy related use, such as: - your own website (with its look and feel), - email to others, - mailing list posting, - genealogy or historical society newsletter, - as a free handout at libraries The only restrictions that I have for its use is that its text is not edited or altered and, if used in a website, that a link is provided back to my copyright website. Thanks, Sandi. Don't see anything that matches up with my known ones, they were in the McGee area west of Ada, which is apparently Pontotoc or Murray Co now. There's supposed to be Chickasaw in that line, but nobody knows exactly where, so I keep looking<sigh>. I am trying to learn about The Grand GLAIZE KING? Here is a site that I am going to be reading over: http://www.gbl.indiana.edu/archives/miamis9/M46-48_4a.html I'm thinking that these names may be why my husband's GLAZEs can't find where their ancestors originated. I'm sorry I'm a bit late responding to this post. The Cherokee Female Seminary remains -- I attended school there in the 70s. Well, ok. Not exactly. ;-) To be more specific, it has been Northeastern State University (various names), for many, many years now. I don't remember how long. The old Female Seminary building, Seminary Hall, still exists. It was the Admin building when I graduated. I understand it is now undergoing another restoration (or I should say repair, because the last restoration evidently missed a huge problem), so it may or may not be open to the public right now. This Cherokee Female Seminary, was actually the 2nd one (all this from my memory of things I learned while at NOSU in the 70s, so may be a bit off). There was another seminary outside of Tahlequah, built after?? Seminary Hall and I believe it was closed in the early 1900s. So, I suppose it is possible your grandmother could have attended either one. I don't know how the 2 seminaries differed. There was also a Cherokee Male Seminary. I remember, back in the 70s, the only part of the old Male Seminary, which remained, were the round, brick columns from the "front porch" of the building. Even then, when my inclination towards preserving American Culture was in its infancy, I was irritated that no one had bothered to preserve any part of the building. :-( The descendants of the Female Seminary students get together in Tahlequah, each year, so perhaps you can make plans to do that some year. If you look for info on NOSU (as it was callled when I was there) or NSU (what it is called now), you may find pics of Seminary Hall and definitely a history of the school. This URL brings up the issue of the female seminary curriculum change, which I never knew about before. Grrrr! http://brownvboard.org/brwnqurt/04-3/04-3f.htm Here is a link to the National Historic Register website -- Cherokee National Seminary entry: http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com/OK/Cherokee/state.html Someone who knows the history of the area better than I, may be able to provide further info on the seminaries and/or correct my mistakes. :-) acp -------- Original Message -------- Got a couple of questions to ask all you wonderful Cherokee researchers on this list. ...snipping.... Now last evening I talked to my mother's sister on the phone she lives in Muskogee. She said that her mother, my grandmother also went to a female seminary in Tahlequah. She says that the building is still standing and that it has a clock tower on it. My grandmother went to this seminary in the early 1900s. It there such a building and was there such school. I knew that there was one but thought that it burnt down. If there was such a school where can I get the records and what grades did it cover? She was probably there in the 7or 8th grades. She was born in 1889. She may have going to the school in 1902 and 03. Hope that someone can help me for I live in PA and am not close to OK. Thanks for any helf anyone can give me. Got a couple of questions to ask all you wonderful Cherokee researchers on this list. My grandmother went to a school called Beck it is in Delaware Co. now but it was Goingsnake Dist. before state hood. It is still sitting on Beck land across Flint Creek and the old Hildebrand Mill. It is also known as the Beck Hildebrand Mill. The old school house is being restored. My Cherokee Grandma Willora C. J. Bee went to school there and she met my grandfather there. He was white so the school served both Indian and white. His sisters went there too. Soooo I am very interested in the history of that school and want to know where I can get the school records. I have asked the OK historical society in Ok city but they do not have them. Does anyone know where to look? Now last evening I talked to my mother's sister on the phone she lives in Muskogee.
