    3. I am someone who continues to receive the Digest, although not an active transcriber.  I transcribed  about twenty five ships from 2004 to 2009 for Volumes 6 -11.  I am grateful to ISTG.  Without ISTG I would never have thought to become so involved in passenger lists, their many abbreviations and notations, ports of departure and ports of entry, shipping lines, quarantines, detained aliens and boards of special inquiry that I would become the go-to person in my genealogical society when a question on the subject comes up. 3. Hi Patty, I am not opposed to Facebook, I am on quite a few public lists. My cousin set up a private Mannhardt family list. As far a s I know none of my contacts can see what gets posted there unless they are also a member of the list. If you followed the Listowner list conversations, you will know that a lot of the admins are going to Groups.io. I did not follow the comments in detail but I think Groups.io is getting overwhelmed with the traffic and is having problems. The lists I admin have hardly any traffic, I'll see what I do with them. Whatever you decided, I am with you, Ines

Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Patty MacFarlane via ISTG-STAFF Sent: Monday, January 13, 2020 3:37 PM To: istg-staff@rootsweb.com Cc: Patty MacFarlane Subject: [ISTG-STAFF] Our Rootsweb Mailing List Is Going Away Good Morning, Crew, Ancestry had decided that as of March 2, 2020 all Rootsweb Mailing Lists - that includes this digest - are going away. This happened once before a few years ago and I tried to set up a similar mailing list on Yahoo. That turned out to be a mess and very few people joined; so almost all of our volunteers were without this digest for nearly a year, and because of that we lost many transcribers. Ancestry apparently will offer an alternative to have an Ancestry list (as I understand it) however, one must join Ancestry to participate.  It goes without saying, this alternative does not sit down with me at all. I can't even afford to join Ancestry and they have stopped giving me a free subscription long ago. There are a couple of other sites where a mailing list such as this one could be set up. It's a lot of work. I am seriously thinking of setting up an Immigrant Ships facebook page. Before you balk at that idea, let me say a few things. I am an author and belong to several private author groups on facebook. Only members can post and read posts of others in that group. Yes, it would mean that each of you would have to set up a facebook page, however, you can make that page private, never ever post to it, and it's free. You could simply sign into facebook and click on the Immigrant Ships page, select 'join' and also 'follow.' Then you would be able to post to that page and also receive a notification any time someone posts to that page. I don't expect the page would be very active because currently our digest isn't very active. This would give our volunteers an opportunity to effectively communicate with each other, and it also provides a place for Mary to post uploads, etc. It also allow for pictures and attachments to be posted. Right now it seems like the most logical thing to do. Each January I usually post to this digest asking who wants to continue to receive this list. I get many responses, however few of those people are actually actively transcribing and contributing to our website. And, aside from this digest, we have pretty much zero visibility. This might be a way to attract new volunteers and rebuild the number of transcribers we have. We need new people as none of us are getting any younger and the possibility of ISTG coming to an end. If we have a facebook group, each request to join would have to be approved by the page administrator, and there can be several administrators. It can also be set up so that a new member's post would have to be approved. That way we can eliminate spam just like we do now. We have a little time to consider this, and I would appreciate input from all of you. 3. Hi Patty. I am not a fan of Facebook for all kinds of reasons, but do have a FB page that I don’t use and would be happy to use FB for ISTG purposes. I can suggest one alternative to consider—Google groups. I belong to several Google groups (several neighborhoods I have lived or worked in have them) and they work well for basic communication. No spam. But I don’t know if it would help with publicity. Just a thought. Happy new year! 3. I agree the Facebook solution is best. Be aware, however, that postings to the ISTG Facebook timeline may echo automatically on the poster’s personal Facebook page and to anyone following that person. This happened to me on my private genealogy page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/195704304680503/, and some of my kin were quite upset about posts going essentially public.
