Hello Listers, this is my first posting in a while,have been concentrating research elsewhere on other lines, my message is aimed primarily for Sandy but may help others, I posted my Dore information on this site last year so please look in the archives Sandy, I am afraid I have not been able to add anything further to my DORE'S as I cannot find a marriage for Eliza's parents James and Martha, so I do not know her maiden name at the moment.I hope this helps others and shows how harsh times can nearly wipe out whole families and I presume at times it did. John Hobbs of Carisbrooke (at time of marriage)m. Elizabeth Dore of Niton (no marriage full date found as yet) 1837 children 1.Elizabeth Martha daughter of John Hobbs and Eliza of Little Birchmore 27/8/1837 Arreton, died age 14 18/12/1851 Barton village. 2.William of John and Eliza of Cross Lane 11/8/1839 Whippingham, died age 17, buried 12/5/1856 House of Industry. 3&4.Mary Ann and Maria twin daughters of John and Eliza nee Dore, Barton village, born 5/9/1841, christened 24/10/1841 Newport Primitive Methodist. 5.Jane daughter of John and Eliza born 25/2/1844, ch.24/3/1844, died 1/10/1847 age 3yrs 7mths Barton Village. 6.Joseph of John and Eliza Barton village ch. 20/12/1846 living at Tapnell Cottage Thorley in the 1881 census, m. Fanny Hobbs(father Joseph) 12/12/1868 Shorwell. 7.Charles son of John and Eliza Barton Barton village ch.18/3/1849, died 2/4/1853 House of Industry age 5 8&9.Eliza and John twins of John and Eliza born/christened 3/11/1850, Eliza the mother then died in the House of Industry and was buried 23/12/1850 Barton age 31. John (infant) d.23/4/1851 House of Industry. Eliza d.9/4/1853 House of Industry. John the father was living with his son Joseph in the 1881 census and gives his year of birth as 1814 at Kingston We then tracked our Mary Ann Hobbs down to the following information. 1871 census. George Gustar unmarried 43 Rookley labourer. Mary A Hobbs unmarried lodger 29 Barton laundress. George Hobbs 9 Barton Emily Jane Hobbs 6 Barton John Hobbs 3 Barton all living 103 Barton village. George Gustar m. Mary A Hobbs 1872 1881 census. George Gustar 60 Brading labourer Mary A Gustar 40 Whippingham George Gustar 19 Whippingham John Gustar 12 Whippingham William Gustar 8 Whippingham Albert Gustar 2 Whippingham and living separately as a servant was Emily Jane Gustar age 16. George Gustar and Mary Ann Hobbs also had the following children Mary Jane Gustar 22/5/1875 Barton Charles Gustar 24/6/1876 Barton Walter Gustar 3/3/1880 Barton, these three must have died because they do not appear on the 1881 census with the others, and the last child Rhoda Gustar 24/9/1882 Barton. When George, Emily Jane and John got married they all married as Hobbs and their father was named as George Gustar. George Henry Hobbs married Sarah Jane Feaver (widow) 15/10/1893 Barton. Emily Jane Hobbs married Isaac Snow 28/9/1890 Barton John Hobbs married Eliza Rolf in 1892 they are my Grandmother Annie Louise's parents.
