My late grandfather Harold WESTMORE was a gunner on a ship during the D-Day landings. He was from the Isle of Wight and I'm sure he would have had mixed emotions being so near home and yet so far away as they set off. He would never talk about the war. I've no idea what ship he was on. Getting permission to apply for his Service Records doesn't seem possible at present. I have, however, pieced together a list of dates and places using his Army Pay Book, postcards and photos though. Is it known how many or in which battalion any Hampshire/Isle of Wight soldiers involved in the D-Day Landings were, or were they all over the place!? Just wondered anyway. At the very least how many others had a person on their tree setting off for Normandy 60 years ago? Cheers Suzanne (Maitland-Wood)
