Hello Derek, I put in "Southern Railway Paddle Steamers" into Google and there are several sites on there.What lovely memories the old steamers recall.When we were children we always went to the engine room door to see the engines working,can even remember the oily smell !!     3. Now that does bring back memories Valerie!! The old "Shanklin" and others named after the islands towns! I always knew when it was holiday time, the smell of the old steam trains at Southampton Central, then the smell of the sea and mud at Portsmouth Harbour, but best of all was the smell of the paddle steamers, and the sound of their paddles hitting the water! Thanks for bringing back the memories, will check out the website!
