General opinion favoured son in law as meaning step son . Can't see how myself .. the exact entry reads ' This day James Breton son in law to John Archibald and his spouse Marion Archibald had a son bap named David' I know mothers were sometimes left off bap details this isn't a problem . I am just wondering if perhaps the Minister put down the in laws in lieu of the mother not being documented ? If I am missing something I'd appreciate someone enlightening me Angela I read the entry as David being the son of James Breton and Marion Archibald. John Archibald is Marion Archibald's father and therefore James Breton's father-in-law. Am I missing something? Don SHEPPARD, Euclid, Ohio USA

    3. Angela Don and John provide plausible explanations, but I can't help wondering why the minister felt the need to show who the Grandfather of David Breton was. I don't recall seeing too many baptism entries where wither of the Grandparents of the child being baptised were mentioned. Most entries would simply state that David was the son of James Breton and Marion, if Marion were indeed James' spouse. Angela, please put us out of our misery and give us some more clues. When and where is this baptism recorded (it does not seem to be on the IGI)? Are there any other references in the registers, especially burials and marriages to the Bretons or the Archibalds. Perhaps the Archibalds were prominent persons in the parish, hence the reference to the Grandfather.
