    1. [IoW] Kingswell, Joyce and possibly Martin
    2. Hi Listers I see there have been a few posts about KINGSWELL recently. I am at an early stage of research on my Isle of Wight connection and I wonder if anyone can help me. According to information gleaned from family members, my GG grandparents were William JOYCE and Jane KINGSWELL. I only know about Jane being a Kingswell from some notes left by my great aunt. So far I have been unable to find a record of this marriage, although there is a William Joyce marrying a Jane MARTIN in 1869 in Ryde, and I am wondering if this is the couple I am looking for and perhaps there was some mistake about Kingswell being Jane's surname. Could it have been her mother's maiden name instead? The information I have so far about them is: 1. According to my great aunt, they lived in Myrtle Cottage, Nelson Road, Ryde, although they may previously have lived in Winchester. Apparently Jane had some relatives in Wales. Their children included Frederick Ernest Joyce (my great grandfather), Leonard (the youngest son), another son, and daughters Annie and Minnie. Minnie married someone called Walter and, after she died, Annie married him! 3. On the 1881 census there is a family, which I think may be the right one, living at 42 Union Road, Ryde and comprising: William Joyce, aged 30, born in Ventnor and working as a fly driver Jane Joyce, wife of the above, aged 34, born in Ventnor Minnie Joyce, daughter, aged 11 William Joyce, son, aged 6 Charles Joyce, son, aged 1 Anne Joyce, daughter, aged 3 4. Frederick Ernest Joyce was born in Ryde in 1882 (according to the IGI, but I do not have his birth certificate) and died in 1924 in London. He married Ellen CULL, originally from Fawley in Hampshire, in Ryde in 1905. 5. Jane Joyce died in 1916, supposedly aged 64, although this differs from her age on the 1881 census. I understand that she was buried in Ryde cemetery, but I don't know whether there is a headstone there. 6. Ellen CULL was a Congregationalist, so perhaps the Joyce family were as well? Can anyone throw any light on the origins of either William Joyce or his wife Jane (Kingswell?) Many thanks for any help you can give. Regards Lindsay Mohindra
