    1. Re: [IoW] A House in Bonchurch
    2. Hello Mal, Sorry not to have seen your message until today but I have been home to the Island for a week. The house Deepdene is opposite the Rectory, now flats, in Bonchurch or nearby is what was Bonchurch Hotel,we moved to Bonchurch in 1947 and I have only known this building as flats,as it still is today.Deepdene is at the begining of The Pits, but at the top of the Bonchurch Hill, near the New Church.De Vere Stacpool lived there until he died in 1951,he is buried in the church yard,I know this because my parents are buried there and I saw De vere Stacpoole's grave yesterday. There is a blue plaque on the house gate commemorating the fact that De Vere Stacpoole lived at Deepdene. He was born in Ireland in 1863,trained as a physician, came to live at Bonchurch in 1920.If you look at Invectis.co.uk there are photos of the pond which he gave to the village after his frst wife Margaret died, his house is above it so I suppose the pond was on his land. I can't help you with the Humby name but I went to school at Sandown Grammar with a Pamela Humby who came from Southampton, she later married my cousin.Humby appears to be a Southampton name. Bonchurch is a beautiful village. The Ventnor Heriatage Centre is excellent and the staff very helpful,I know Fay very well and she will certainly be able to help you,I was in there yesterday. Kind regards Valerie, now back in Kent
