Hi everyone Just seeing if anyone can offer any advice re the marriage of an Ann Parsons to an Edward Trussell on 28 September 1714 in Northwood, Isle of Wight. I think that Edward Trussell was later shown as Edward Trusler whilst he was ensconced tin Winchester Goal in 1733/34 for running goods (smuggling). I also think he is the same Edward Trusler of West Cowes who surfaced in South Carolina c1735 together with children born in England viz - Ann born before 1723 in England - possibly on the IOW - Mary born 5 Oct 1723 in West Cowes - Elizabeth born about 1725 who married a John Grisham in Southampton bef 1755 - Edward born about 1735 either in England or South Carolina I have not been able to find a wife for Edward Trusler, other than Ann Parsons, who I cannot find a trace of either? Regards Peter Jones Studying Trus(s)ler, Tus(s)ler, Truslo/oe/ow, Trasler, Tres(s)ler, Truslove etc worldwide.
Hi Peter The hypothesis that Trussell and Trusler are variant spellings of the same name is, I think, a valid one (having been to several sessions on surnames at the 30th anniversary conference of the Federation of Family History Societies I think most of us might need to be more lateral thinking about surnames - another possibility thrown up by that is that someone might have pronounced the d on Edward as a t sound and it might actually have been Edward Russell!!) Cowes chapel registers (now St Mary's church) are patchy in the late 1600's and missing altogether from October 1706 - January 1761 - Cowes was in the parish of Northwood so many Cowes residents married there. Also Whippingham (which covered East Cowes) registers do not start (i.e. survive from) until 1728. So if your Edward and Ann came from Cowes (East or West) you might not find them because of the lack of registers and will have to think about other types of records e.g. wills of possible relatives. You should also bear in mind though that Cowes was growing and pulling in people from elsewhere - some from other Island parishes but others from across the water in nearby Hampshire parishes and also from other places on the coast (travel by sea was quicker than by land at that time). So they may not have come from the Island at all. Did the Elizabeth marry in Southampton in America or Southampton in Hampshire? It might pay you to try looking for any older children of the couple who may have stayed behind being already apprenticed or in service by the time he left - they may have been left with relations in this country. Happy hunting Di PS was he transported for smuggling or did he go under his own steam? By mid century there was a lot of rice coming through Cowes from South Carolina - I am not sure when it started but there were likely links between the two places. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Jones" <lpjones@csma-netlink.co.uk> To: <ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, September 04, 2004 1:12 PM Subject: Ann PARSONS & Edward TRUSSELL or TRUSLER Hi everyone Just seeing if anyone can offer any advice re the marriage of an Ann Parsons to an Edward Trussell on 28 September 1714 in Northwood, Isle of Wight.
