Jan You can find out most of the information yourself using the Isle of Wight Family History Searchable Birth & Marriage index at: http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/ Normally to "look up" the information you provided is not really possible without getting the certificate that the GRO ref would provide. However because of the great work of the IOWFHS, and a bit of luck with the dates, entering Cave & 1869 in the searchable birth index lists George and provides the "other surname" as LEWIS (this is usually but not always the Mother's maiden name). Using this you can look up the marriages and hope that the parents married on the Island as well. In this case entering CAVE as surname for marriages from 1837 to 1870 revealed the possible (or perhaps probable) marriage also in 1869 of George Cave and Ellen Lewis at Christ Church Sandown. You should of course confirm this is the correct marriage by applying for a copy of the birth and marriage certificates but I think its a fair bet that this is the information you are looking for. Getting the certificate will of course also give you some extra information including of course date of birth, date of marriage, address, occupation etc. I'm not sure if the IOW Registrar can provide copies overseas, if they can then the reference in the index (which is not the same as the gro ref) can be used to order it, and the IOWFHS even provide an application form partially completed to help. If not I believe you can now apply online for a GRO Certificate.
