In the 1891 census my grandmother Florence Thompson appears as one of about 50 young women working for a ladies tailor. The premises at which they were living (and presumably working?) was 41 - 42 High Street Civil Parish of Northwood. The name of the town looks like `washbourne'. Does anyone know what this establishment might have been. Family history has that she worked for a firm called `Redfern's' who made dresses for Queen Victoria. I hope there is someone out there who can throw some light on this Thanks Jean in New Zealand
<41 - 42 High Street> Yes, Redfern's were at that address. The town is Cowes. They were a prominent outfitters so would have had a large staff - unmarried shopgirls and seamstresses would be likely to have lived in. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Keith & Jean Ross" <rosskj@ihug.co.nz> To: <ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, July 29, 2004 10:04 AM Subject: Tailors in Northwood.
