Hi Andrea I can't help you with Woodman HILLIER but can add a little more information about FAMILY 2. I believe this to be John HILLIER and Jane STAGG, married 30 Sep 1803 in Freshwater. I have one son recorded (because this is not my direct line of research) and that is John Hillier, born about 1804 in Freshwater. He was a cordwainer/shoemaker according to several records between 1839 and 1881 and lived at Middleton (one of the hamlets in the Freshwater parish). The reason for my interest is that his wife is Martha RYALL, who he married 22 Sep 1838 in Freshwater. Martha was born 4 Jul 1808 in Kingston, christened 28 Aug 1808 Kingston. They had 5 children that I am aware of (but could be more), William (1839, Kingston), Walter (1842, Kingston), Sophia (1845, Freshwater), Mary Ann (19 Nov 1847, Freshwater) and George (1850, Freshwater). Note that although William and Walter were christened in Freshwater the 1851 census indicates that they were born in Kingston. Mary Ann HILLIER will be well known to many on the list as she is one of the famous "sitters" for the pioneer photographer, Julia Margaret CAMERON. It would be feasible of course for Woodman to have been another sibling of this family, Niton of course is somewhat closer to Kingston than Freshwater, but I have no evidence to support this theory. Hope this helps a little Jon Baker -----Original Message----- From: ANDREA COX [mailto:ajcox255@hotmail.com] Sent: 11 July 2004 13:47 To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Woodman HILLIER Hello Listers, after my previous message regarding Woodman Hillier, we have now a few queries that I am hoping the list can help with. In the earlier message we listed Woodman Hillier b.1810 Niton m. Sarah REYNOLDS 1836 St Lawrence children Jane 1838 Chale William 1839 Chale Woodman 1841 Chale James 1843 Chale Sarah Ann 1845 Chale We know Woodman Hillier b.1810 was on the Highways Commission at Compton in 1863 and his daughter Sarah Ann married in Freshwater in 1871. This is where I have the query, previously we listed deaths for two of Woodman's sons, firstly William b. 1839 Chale, we said he died 6/6/1856 age 16 Niton, I know the age would fit but something tells me there must be another William Hillier born at Niton and not at Chale, does anyone know of a William Hillier born at Niton about 1839. Then there is Woodman Hillier born 1841 Niton, I previously wrote that he was christened 5/3/1846 Middleton nr Totland, this date should have been a death, didn't have my glasses on at the time, well now after checking some more Hillier records at the record office we believe it was not Woodman Hillier 1841 Niton that died at Middleton. In the 1841 census are these two families in the Freshwater area that will hopefully help to solve our problem. FAMILY 1 William age 50 Sarah wife age 50 Charles age 25 Selina wife age 25 Jane age 3 Richard age 1 living at Compton I believe this is Woodman Hillier's (1810) parents William Hillier and Sarah GUY,Woodmans brother Charles born 1815 Niton and Charles wife Selina whose maiden name was also Hillier. We know that Charles and Selina had the following children but have not yet found a record of the Jane. William Richard b. 31/12/1839 ch. 11/2/1840 Freshwater Charles ch. 27/3/1842 Freshwater Sarah Ann b. 6/11/1843 ch. 10/3/1844 Selina the mother was buried 19/11/1843, we then found a Henry Woodman son of Charles HELLYER farmer of Freshwater and Emma WHITE of Brading ch.23/12/1848 Brading. Is this the same Charles that was married to Selina? FAMILY 2 John Hillier age 50/60 (census record unclear) Jane wife age 50/60 (again unclear) John Hillier age 35 Martha wife age 35 William age 2 all living Pound Green Middleton Freshwater. We know that John and Martha had the following children William ch. 5/5/1839 Freshwater Walter ch. 27/3/1842 Freshwater Sophia ch. 21/3/1845 Freshwater Mary Ann ch. 28/11/1847 Freshwater George ch. 2/6/1850 Freshwater We feel that the Woodman Hillier bu. 5/3/1846 Middleton Freshwater fits in better with this family and would be glad to hear from anyone who recognizes any of the names listed to discuss it. The name Woodman Hillier seems to go back several generations as there was a Woodman Hillier bu. 5/2/1659 Carisbrooke,I have gone back as far as I wish to on this line for now, but do know there are other Hillier researchers that may wish to continue so please if anyone has any links to those listed let the list know and we can then help them, many thanks and sorry if it was a long one, regards Andrea Cox _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself with cool new emoticons http://www.msn.co.uk/specials/myemo ______________________________
