    3. Cannot remember who asked but was at IWRO today so asked the Count Archivist. He said that there are a few - Godshill, Newchurch and Newport particularly but that because of the House of Industry, which predated most workhouses by 50 years, they tend to end around 1770. Godshill and Newchurch are listed individually in the handlist to the parish records, 18th century it looked like. Those for Newport, which are presumably fairly numerous, are still in bundles of several years together but there is an alphabetical index book for them 1681 - 1774. Newchurch and Newport I noticed also have good runs of rate books and accounts in the parish records

    3. Di Thanks for the information on settlement records (it was me that asked). Looks like a possible avenue for me to explore next time I get down to the Island. Kind of hoping you might have said Calbourne but that was a tad optimistic. Thanks also for the information on Goldings/Goldrings, though still not sure how I would pronounce 'gu:ldnz' even in dialect. Perhaps I'll stick to nammits and mallishags ;-) Jon Baker Calne, Wiltshire, UK Family History: www.vectis10w.freeserve.co.uk Calne & District Skittles League: www.calneskittles.org.uk Researching: RYALL (Isle of Wight/South Africa), DOWNTON (Dorset/IOW/NZ), KEEN (Gloucs/IOW), WALKER (Oxford/Nova Scotia), JOHNSON (Gloucs), BAKER (London/Hampshire), HAYTER (Hampshire), HUGHES (Co Armagh), STEWART (Co Down) ----- Original Message ----- From: Diana Harding <di.harding@virgin.net> To: <ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: 06 January 2004 21:22 Subject: [IoW] Re SETTLEMENT RECORDS > Cannot remember who asked but was at IWRO today so asked the Count > Archivist.
