    1. [IoW] Geelong Cottage, Calbourne
    2. Smissen Family
    3. On a visit to the Isle of Wight last year, I passed through Calbourne and noticed a small dwelling named "Geelong Cottage". I was intrigued by the name for two reasons: - I work in and live near Geelong in Victoria, Australia and, as Geelong is an anglicised version of the aboriginal name for the bay upon which the city of Geelong now lies, it seems that there must be a connection. - My great great grandmother, Jane HOBBS, was born in Calbourne in 1827. She married James SPRAKE in 1852 and came to Australia, arriving in Geelong in January 1853. Jane and James lived in Geelong for 15 years before moving into western Victoria. I cannot help but believe there must be a connection between my great great grandmother Jane, the city of Geelong in Australia and the name of the cottage. Does anyone have any idea knowledge of this cottage and the origins of its name? Also interested in any info on the HOBBS family of Calbourne (or elsewhere on IOW). Cheers, Ian in Oz
