Hello List, My grandfather, William Wood TEALL. Married Ellen TUTTON, at Northwood Parish Church IoW , April 3rd 1864. Their daughter, Clara Jane, was born March 26th 1865. She was baptised at the Parish Church Northwood IoW, the date entered in the church's baptisms register is April 31st.(is the IoW that Different?) On all the certificates my grandfathers address was given as the Gas House, East Cowes. His occupation , Gas Manager. I am hoping to find someone, who may be able to help me find out some thing about the gas works in the above period, is the house still standing, is there any thing left of the gas works.? Hello Graham, I went in to East Cowes Heritage Centre yesterday and asked about the gasworks. They were built in 1859 and were sited in Clarence Road. Apparently there was an explosion there in 1862 when 2 people were killed. The works were resited in Kingston Road in the 1920s or 30s and the original site then became a boat yard and is now part of the GKN factory site (previously known as BHC then Westland Aerospace). I don't know where the manager's house was. For a map showing the Gasworks in 1866 go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ and enter "East Cowes". When the map comes up, enlarge it to "1" and then recentre using the red arrows - three times using the bottom arrow and once using the left arrow. The road coming in from the bottom right is Yarborough Road and the one from the top right is Osborne Road, meeting at Clarence Road opposite the Gasworks.
