    3. Angela I have to agree with Di Harding's suggestion. This is I am sure going to be Merchant Mariner. It is often difficult to distinguish between the capital letters M, N and U. Lower case n and r are frequently badly formed and can easily be confused too. Even without the Un at the beginning (which I think is just a poorly written Mer), I think you have a word that definitely ends 'chant'. In all my years of maritime records and running the Mariners mailing list, I haven't ever seen another word that I think that might be, but I have seen an awful lot of shocking handwriting <g>. If it would help, you could either email me a scan of the document off list obviously, or send me a photocopy by snailmail and I'll have a look?
