Dear Isle-of-Wight Listers, This is a one off message and not an invitation to discuss viruses on Isle-of-Wight-L. The Anti-Virus software companies have detected a new threat that contains a password protected file, which stops the Anti-Virus software scanning the infected part of the message. For further details see: < http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.beagle.h@mm.html > < http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_101068.htm > < http://www.trendmicro.com/vinfo/virusencyclo/default5.asp?VName=WORM_BAGLE.H > Like most infected message the From address is forged, so it could appear to have come from the Isle-of-Wight List or another Isle-of-Wight-L lister. All the Mailing Lists on RootsWeb are protected from viruses in at least three ways. The List Server will reject messages with attachments and messages that are not Plain Text (e.g. HTML or RTF). There is also a size limit that messages have to be smaller than (the limit is set to be smaller than the smallest infected message). RootsWeb actively look for messages that might contain known viruses or SPAM, these are then forwarded to the Listowners for verification. If you do receive something that appears to have come from the list, or in reply to a list message please forward it to the current List Admin (usually me) at < Isle-of-Wight-Admin@rootsweb.com >. Include the name and e-mail address of the sender and, if possible, the full header of the message. Please send any text that came with the message, the name of any attachment, but not the attachment itself. There is a list < Virus-Discussion-L@rootsweb.com > especially for virus warnings and queries about viruses. Please can any further discussion on this topic be conducted off the list.
