Thanks to Ann Barrett (again, where would my RYALL research be without her and Les) I have found why another of "my" IW RYALLs appeared to have gone walkabout, in this case almost literally. On Ann's site she had a reference to an H H RYALL in the County Press in 1926. Ann sent me a copy of the photograph and it showed Herbert Henry Ryall, JP of Ryde, son of T Ryall who had been appointed as private secretary to the former Australian PM William Morris Hughes. Having found this out, I then discovered with a little googling that HH died in 1975, and the Ryerson Index http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/dpsindex.htm indicates that there is an obituary in the Sydney Morning Herald of 4 Jan 1975. Here's the point - do any of our Australian subscribers know how I might obtain a copy/transcript of this obituary? It would hopefully give some more useful information about what happened to him and any further family connections. I think I have found that he married Janet Burton Chapman but would like to confirm if possible. It still amazes me how one little snippet can translate so quickly into lots more useful information. Thanks again Ann. Since then I found in the latest IOWFHS journal received yesterday that Herbert's sister Elsie Margaret who I knew married Henry W O Weeks became mayoress of Ryde during WW2. Henry was mayor of course, and his son was Colin Weeks, whose diary has been serialised in the last few IOWFHS journals - I had not previously taken much interest in them but now will have to go and re-read them with a new insight. Its interesting to see that this branch of the RYALLs who were (like most others) ordinary labourers/ag labs, suddenly gave rise to the mayoress of Ryde, and the private secretary to a former Oz PM. Jon I think a lot of people on this list would be lost without Ann and Les Barrett. What a smashing couple, they never complain about the number of people that contact them. This world would be a much better place with more people like these two. They are the "foundation stones" of this list! Jon, Looks like you were right re the marriage. NSW BDMs are searchable on line. Go to: http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au and search for Herbert Ryall. You should come up with a marriage in 1942 to Janet Burton Chapman. Hi John, If you subscribe to DPS-SYDNEY-D@rootsweb.com You will find there are kind people who will look up the Sydney Morning Herald reference you have given and let you know what it says. It might only be a short reference to the funeral but that would give you something more to work on. If you have any difficulty I could write to them for you. Hope this helps Lis Warwood -----Original Message----- From: Jon Baker [mailto:jon@vectis10w.freeserve.co.uk] Sent: Thursday, 26 August 2004 7:10 AM To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [IoW] Looking for help with IW RYALL in Oz Thanks to Ann Barrett (again, where would my RYALL research be without her and Les) I have found why another of "my" IW RYALLs appeared to have gone walkabout, in this case almost literally.
