    3. Hi Beverly, William WILLIER and Joan COTTON were my 10th great grandparents. I have got copies of both of their wills and also a copy of William’s father, Richard WILLIER’s will. For example Benjamin Whylliar (in many entries) left a 1751 will as Benjamin Wheeler of Freshwater. William Willier md 1587 to Joan Cotton is one of my ancestors and left a will with name Willyer. I have transcribed the Freshwater parish register and it is on the Isle of Wight Family History Website. I also have copies of many of the Wheeler wills. She married a COTTON. With some of my other WILLIER lines the surname has changed to WHILLIER, WHELIER, WHEELER and other variations. I am not aware of a Benjamin WHIILIAR/WHILLIER from Brading. The Isle of Wight being a rural area many people were illiterate. There was no requirement to be able to read or write to work on the land, in the fishing industry or as a servant in one of the big houses. Spelling of names often varied especially if the speaker’s accent was hard to comprehend. I have WHEELER in my ancestry which appear to go back to a Benjamin WHILLIAR/WHILLIER from Brading. Is there a connection between WHILLIER and WILLIER do think? Regards ... Ros.
