>From Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle (Portsmouth) Saturday May 21, 1859 The chamion's belt, lately won by Mr. Kellaway of Merston Cottage, as being the head of the pigeon shooters, but which he was only entitled to wear after winning two matches in succession, was wrested from him on Monday last, after a very short holding, by Mr. Green, of Ryde, wine merchant, who at a match at Fairlee on Monday last, at twenty-one birds, for the belt and a purse of sovereigns, killed his first fifteen birds right off the muzzle, while his opponent missed seven out of his fifteen! consequently nothing could turn the scales in his favour, and the trophy was handed over to Mr. Green, to hold on the same conditions. (I guess the seven he missed were very grateful!) Bruce C. Callaway Sydney Australia E-mail [email protected]
