Many thanks to all the people who responded to my request. I now know why I couldn't find Richard on my 1881 census disks - he is recorded as Richard _*Law *_not Lane. He was obviously living with his eldest daughter Sarah A. I suspected as much but didn't know who she had married. Gill -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG.
