I bought an old postcard of St Thomas' Square the other day, which was posted on 20th July 1908 (at 8pm!). It was addressed to W. Gabriel CRITCHELL at Rose Cottage, Calbourne. I found Mr Critchell on the 1891 and 1901 census and he was born around 1889. I'm not sure if the person who wrote this card was his 'girlfriend' at the time, but his army records show that he enlisted in August of the same year, and was later married in 1916 to a Lilian Sarah HARRIS in Putney. You can see the postcard contrasted with a present day view of the square here <http://www.flickr.com/photos/auntiep/2581655918/>, and the back of the postcard with my attempt at a transcript here <http://www.flickr.com/photos/auntiep/2580819561/in/photostream/>. Does anyone have any information on this family? P
Sadly no link to my family, but a lovely puzzle! Going by the IoWFHS database William Gabriel's mother was a LYNE which might connect with somebody on the list. W G and Lilian Sarah must have returned to the island because there's a son, CRITCHELL Peter Lyne, born Newport 1920. No sign of any other children though. There are entries in the Phone directories that look possible... CRITCHELL, William G.
