I would think that normally a shoemaker wouldn't be that wealthy but the thought that occurred to me is that it might be possible that he was making shoes just to keep himself buzy. It is quite possible for example that he had originally inherited the money and having enough to live on wasn't making his living only by making shoes. I thought of this because I am in a similiar situation. I have more than enough money to live on from an inheritence that my father left me however being idle drives me crazy so I sell Avon and have a hypnotherapy business just so I will have something to do to keep me buzy and to keep me out amongst others. One or two of mine were Shoemakers in Scotland and reading what you have written has made me wonder if there was more of a need according to where people lived and of their occupation. I also have Master Hairdressers (Male) in my tree, and I wondered similarly until someone reminded me that the fashion was also in wigs.
