Hi Karen I can see the John Matthias Jones on both FreeBMD and on the Isle of Wight Family History Society site at... http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/ death shown as 1879 on the island. I then did a quick search for John on the 1871 census. There is a Johns Jones shown as lodger living in Wickham, Hampshire, born about 1810, working as a Carpenter and Joiner, married, born Fishguard, Pembroke. I know that John Jones is a very common name, especially in Wales, but could this be your man? What is shown as his job on the earlier census returns? If it is him, then it could well be that he carried on moving around in search of work and ended up on the island. Hopefully the death certificate will throw some light on this. Hopefully someone on this list can help me. I am looking for my GGG Grandfather, John Matthias Jones born abt 1809. According to his marriage certificate he was born in Carmarthen Wales but there is no record of this as yet. He married Ann Maria Allchin in London in 1846 and had 2 children - Ann Maria born 1846 and Christopher Thomas born 1847. There is no record of the family in the 1851 census. In the 1861 census Ann and her daughter Ann are listed as living with Ann's father at his pub in London. John & Christopher are boarding in London. After that there are no records of John or Christopher until Christopher shows up in Australia in 1879. I have just located a John Matthias Jones on the FreeBMD and am awaiting the death certificate from the GRO, but am hoping that someone may know of him and if he may have divorced Ann and remarried. I would be grateful for any help.
