    3. I wonder can anyone tell me if there is a certain place that records prisoners at certain jails on census returns? Also the recording of deaths in prison, is there somewhere the names of ordinary prisoners can be found against those hanged? Any help appreciated. Kate

    3. That's a good question and it would make for a lot of interest I would think. I've come across lists when accessing Ancestry & FreeCEN but that's when looking for a single family name. 3. I have seen Prisoners recorded in the 1851 census for Devon and Norfolk. I have recorded some of them in my website, but only those who were of the 'smith' trade. 3. Prison censuses were taken in the usual way and the returns were usually found in the enumerators books towards the end under "Institutions". However on ancestry and other similar internet resources, a search for the name will usually find the person. However, the Heads of all large institutions (prisons, hospitals workhouses and the like)were permitted to record inmates by their initials only as a privilege to save the Head time - otherwise the task of recording a couple of thousand names would take forever! Not all did this and in some cases, actual names are shown.
