Hi everyone, I am hoping someone will be able to find ir direct me to further information about this gentleman my ancestor who spent some time on the Isle of Wight. Francis Hayden WILLIAMS was a Unitarian Minister and was one of the early conservationists according to information I have received so far. The Inquirer,Whitby newspaper memorial notice from January 7th 1911 "quote" "His first pulpit was at East Cowes, in the Isle of Wight. Whilst he was there a dispute arose between the ferrymen and the proprietors of the floating bridge with the regard to the conveyance of passengers across the river Medina. Mr WILLIAMS espoused the cause of the men, and brought it to a successful issue". Also of further interest to me is the mention of " after some years at East Cowes and a visit to the United States" any information on that voyage would be of great interest also. Missing are firm dates of the time spent in East Cowes but the 1871 Census shows Francis and family at Laurel Villa, Whippingham where his occupation is given as Independent Minister of East Cowes Chapel, but on the 1881 census he is in Durham serving as a minister of the free Christian Church in Barnard Castle and Darlington. He became a Unitarian Minister and was appointed to Flowergate Old Chapel Whitby in 1888. 3 sons and a daughter were born on the IOW between 1865 and 1873 a daughter Mary was born in Kent in app;1877 this narrows the time frame of the families time on the Island. Any information gratefully accepted, Carole in Canada IOWFH member 1966. Carole
