Sorry - sent a response last week, but haven't seen it on the digest, regarding my earlier query about Esther Clarke. I neglected to indicate in my original post that her father was Arthur Clarke (deceased) - that is deceased at the time of the wedding in 1860. Esther would have been born about 1824. Both 1861 and 1871 censuses list her place of birth as Isle of Wight. She died in 1872, and I can't find her on earlier censuses. Her father was a soldier, so I'm not sure if the family was from IOW, or just passing through. Angela and Lesley have kindly checked their Clarke/Clark records. What I'm wondering now is - would a birth that happened on the Isle of Wight have been registered elsewhere? Maybe somewhere in Hampshire? Or maybe the whole IOW mention in the census is just a giant red herring. Ann
