    3. Morning Listers! I am looking for the records of Mr. A. KNIGHT who lived, according to my deceased father's address book, at Navarino, The Mall, Newport during 1940s or 1950s. I would like to know whether the address still exists and what the initial A. stood for. Where should I find this information? Regards Jill

    3. Hi Jill Looking at Google Maps The Mall, is actually in the Binstead area, quite a way from Newport, but still known as Newport for postal purposes. Have a look at this link... http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=the+mall,+newport&sll=53. 800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.041601,28.125&ie=UTF8&ll=50.728089,-1.192188&spn=0. 046181,0.109863&t=h&z=13 Using this website http://www.afd.co.uk I can see that the houses in the Mall are just numbered now. It may be that it still has a name written on the actual house if anyone who lives locally would be able to take a stroll along the road. Your best bet is to find someone with a Kelly's Directory for that period. You can usually work out which house is which from them. I've checked a few years of phone directories on www.ancestry.co.uk but no sign of him. To find what A stands for, you might be lucky and find him on the BMD records on the IOW Family History website (http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bmd/start.htm ) if he was either born, or married or died on the island, but there's no guarantee. Hope some of this helps Kate -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jill Marrs Sent: 15 August 2008 07:59 To: [email protected] Subject: [IoW] Re (IOW) KNIGHT Morning Listers! 3. Hi again Jill I just remembered this site... http://www.rydeiow.co.uk/ which has photos of all the roads in the Ryde area. Looking at this, it looks as though 'The Mall' in Binstead is far too recent to have been there in 1940 (see photos on http://www.rydeiow.co.uk/Binstead%20Streets/T/page2.html ) So I did another Google search for 'Navarino Wight' and it came up with this... http://www.bookcottages.com/cottages/100-PFFF-navarino.htm This house is in Ryde, but has a postal address of Newport. Could it be the one? http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=PO33+3AF&ie=UTF8&ll=50.73 1159,-1.172962&spn=0.005772,0.013733&t=h&z=16 Kate

    3. Hi Jill, " The Mall, Newport " runs alongside the High St Newport, near centre of the town. Best wishes Ann ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kate Burhouse" <[email protected]> To: "'Jill Marrs'" <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 15, 2008 12:21 PM Subject: Re: [IoW] Re (IOW) KNIGHT > Hi Jill > Looking at Google Maps The Mall, is actually in the Binstead area, quite a > way from Newport, but still known as Newport for postal purposes. > > Have a look at this link... > > http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=the+mall,+newport&sll=53. > 800651,-4.064941&sspn=11.041601,28.125&ie=UTF8&ll=50.728089,-1.192188&spn=0. > 046181,0.109863&t=h&z=13 > > Using this website http://www.afd.co.uk I can see that the houses in the > Mall are just numbered now. 3. Jill You may find the information you need in the Isle of Wight Electoral Registers. The IWFHS has the 1933 and 1947 Registers (follow the link at http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/bookhead.htm). Problem is that there are several separate booklets for Newport, organized by Wards. Maybe someone on the list has access and would do a look up for you). Regards Jon Baker
