Thank you everyone who took the time and trouble to comment on the possible location of Coppid Thorne. After reading a will dating from 1736 several times, it would seem that there were some houses and outhouses on a piece of land called Coppid Thorne, which were left to an individual called Richard Clarke. Dave Peach had pinpointed a location on the 1891 census called "Coppythorn" which was near Swainston Manor. I'll check it out during my next visit home to the Island as I think this could possibly be the location. Best wishes, Angela Sherry Michigan, U.S.A.
Angela Good spot by Dave. I checked the 1851 census as well, and it would seem that Coppy Thorn is between Langbridge Farm and Calbourne Cross, based on the order that the Enumerator recorded the households. I haven't been able to locate Coppy Thorn or similar on the 1861 or 1871 censuses. Hope that helps Jon Baker -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Angela Sent: 13 August 2008 10:23 To: [email protected] Subject: [IoW] Coppid Thorne, Calbourne, Isle of Wight Thank you everyone who took the time and trouble to comment on the possible location of Coppid Thorne.
