Hello, I am tracing an Annie/Ann VARCOE born around 1833 Ryde who married in 1863 All Saints Newchurch an Alfred GREGORY born 1831 Does anyone have any information on Annie/Ann. I have found the name VARCOE in Cornwall but not on the Island in 1841 or 1851 Thank You Angela in Gloucestershire
Hi Angela This is a tasty little puzzle :-) I see what you mean about VARCOE being a Cornish name. Looking at Ann and Alfred's entry in the 1871 census it suggests that Ann was born in Ryde, IoW in 1839. There's no sign of any VARCOEs in earlier census returns (only did a quick search) so two possible things spring to mind... Perhaps Ann had a previous marriage to a VARCOE whilst off the island. This appears unlikely because they usually put both the maiden and married name on the index in these cases. Or perhaps she changed her surname for some reason - if you look at the IoW FHS births index for the 1830s (http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/ ) there are a couple of Ann with surnames starting with V (e.g. VAN NYVEL). Have you got a copy of Ann and Alfred's marriage certificate? It might throw some light on the puzzle? Have you got copies of the census returns for this family? If not let me know and I'll send you the images.
