A photograph taken by my father in March 1970 shows “Mr and Mrs H Coombes at 21 King Street, BINSTEAD, IOW” (Should it be Kings Road? – see below) He was possibly Henry (Harry) Edmund COOMBES born 23 Feb 1891 Godshill R S D per Birth Certificate son of Clement COOMBES (Mason Journeyman) and Ellen Eliza COOMBES formerly WHITEWOOD. Birth registered 9 April 1891 Godshill IOW UK This Clement COOMBS was a son of Maria MILLMORE and Edmund BLAKE There is a newspaper cutting, undated, (but after 1976 when I met him) which states “Harry Coombes dies at 87 An exhibitor at island gardening shows, Mr Harry Edmund Coombes, has died at his home in Kings Road, Binstead, aged 87. Until recent years he was also a noted poultry breeder, and his greatest moment came some years ago when he won a national award at an exhibition at Olympia. He leaves a widow and a son by his first marriage. In his younger days he was an agricultural worker, but until he retired 21 years ago he worked as a delivery driver for the County Council. During World War I, he served as an artilleryman in Egypt, Mesopotamia and France winning the D.S.M. During World War II he was an air-raid warden at Ryde. He was a member of the Royal British Legion and had served as standard bearer to the former Binstead branch, now merged with Ryde.” His second marriage date was 21 Feb 1963 A photograph on the day, outside the Church shows “Harry and bride (these names written in Harry’s writing) Brother George His 3rd son, Ken George Grover and his wife” There is a record of a Ken Coombes marrying in May 1954 to Elizabeth Ann HISCOCK. Is this the same person? Does anyone know the whereabouts of any family connections? Harry was my Grand-mother’s Cousin. Greetings to friends and relatives.
