I have a John Samuel MIDLANE who was born in 1848 in Portsea. On the 1851 and 1861 census, and his baptism records, he is John Samuel. Then around 1871, he changes to just Henry! In 1881, he has become Henry J. S. and by 1891, he is back to John Samuel, which is what was recorded on his gravestone in 1894. Despite many hours searching, I have yet to find his marriage record (to Jane Emily SIMMONDS of London), but with so many different first names for the couple, and so many potential mis-spellings of both surnames, perhaps it's not surprising!
