Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle Wednesday, Jan 2, 1867 ALLEGED ASSAULT AT COWES. James Rider, Joseph Oatley sen, Joseph Oatley Jun and Tom Oatley. Of West Cowes mariners, were charged with assaulting John Tucker landlord of the Osborne Inn East Street, East Cowes, on the 25 of December. Mr Joyce appeared on part of the complainant, who made an application to the court that the case might be adjourned until Saturday next to obtain witnesses who were not present, which was granted. Rider was bound over to appear, finding one surety with himself in 20/.each -------------------------- Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle Wednesday Jan 9 1867 County petty sessions- Saturday - full report about the assault concluding that James Ryder was the ring leader & the other three were in the disturbance. The court found Ryder 20s & cost or in default of payment, a month imprisonment, with hard labour; the other three, 10s & cost each, or 14 days imprisonment, also with hard labour. I hold my hand up they all are my late husbands, in the first report it is Rider & in the 2nd Ryder (as reported). I can just imagine the scene four drunken mariners on Christmas day.
