    3. Dear Jill, Check out www.fortsandbatteries.co.uk for history and pictures of Sandown Barracks Battery & Sandown Fort. There is loads about the history of IOW on www.iwhistory.org.uk where you will find links to lots of other atricles / sites which may give you more info. Also Parkhurst Barracks (now the Prison) has it's own website at www.wightonline.co.uk/parkhurst-heritage which has a couple of pictures of the barracks, including one of the hospital. Wikipedia - Parkhurst Prison was first built as a military hospital in 1805 and was later transformed to a prison for boys awaiting deportation, mainly to Australia, as part of the Parkhurst act of 1835. It's possible that your father-in-law was actually at Albany Barracks, Parkhurst (as this was the training barracks) - The original buildings were demolished and it also became part of the Prison in the 1960s - there is an old photo of the gate house at http://www.carisbrooke.shalfleet.net/newport_2.htm . 3. Hi Jill As a child growing up in the 1960's I used to walk past "The Barracks" in Sandown enroute for school in the Broadway, Sandown. The building is now used by the Isle of Wight County Council as offices. Part of it is the Inland Revenue Benefits section, part crèche for "The Heights Leisure complex" and part as other enquiry offices. If you check out www.iwight.com (the Council's own website) it is possible to find what the building is used for now.
