    3. Just hoping that someone might see this message and recogonise that this family as part of their descendants. Although I have a lovely lady in Washington who has been helping me, there is nothing like descendants to fill in the gaps. I have Dora Constance May Scovell born 1889 Whitwell/Godshill,who emigrated to live in the New York area. I now have her marriage certificate to a Clifford as they were married in Bedford, Westchester , New York.1916, but it appears from the 1920 census that her husband was a widow by then. Maybe there is someone who knows what happened to her or whether there were any children from that marriage? Her younger brother was Percical Henry John born 1904 Whitwell. Another was Frederick Frank born 1902. Their parents were Daniel Frank Scovell and Clara nee Morris Thank you and kind regards. April nee Morris New Forest.

    1. [IoW] The Vine Inn
    2. Ros Fletcher
    3. I have put together a snapshot of the Vine Inn and its association with the WILLIAMS & SANDERS families, with help from Ann Ryder, as follows: According to "Ryde Pubs - an Illustrated History" the Vine Inn, Pier St was built around 1801 at the western end of Ryde foreshore - "its familiar twin roofs appear in several seafront engravings of that era". The first reference I have to a family connection is an 1828 directory which shows the innkeeper as E WILLIAMS (my 3xg grandfather). By the time of the IOW directory of 1838 and the census of 1841 his widow Mary WIILIAMS was the innkeeper of the Vine. Edward & Mary had 2 daughters that I know of (I think there are probably more siblings) - Sarah, born in 1810 who married Thomas SANDERS & my g.g. grandmother, Lavinia, who married E K MINTER (a Methodist and, I suspect, a teetotaller!!) Thomas SANDERS was the innkeeper at the Vine, Pier St in 1851 & 1861, he was also a builder and is credited with building the Victoria Arcade in Union St. An 1865 directory shows Thomas SANDERS at both the Vine, Pier St & the Globe, Castle St. The 1866 Burial Board petition lists Thomas SANDERS at Castle St and Henry SAUNDERS at Pier St. Thomas died in 1870. The 1871 census shows the innkeeper of the Vine, Pier St as Henry W Sanders. He is living there with his "wife", Catherine, & family - I have found no marriage for them. The IOW BMD death index shows that Henry Williams SANDERS died in 1880 at Ryde so I think it likely he was the eldest son of Thomas & Sarah. (Henry is shown as a post master at Pier St in 1861.) Catherine is also a SANDERS - her father was Cornelius SANDERS who was probably related to Thomas. The Vine in Pier St was demolished in 1871. Catherine SANDERS was the innkeeper of the Vine, Castle St in 1881 & 1891 and in 1895 the licence was transferred to the official receiver - I guess she'd had enough by then! She died in 1901. I hope this is of some general interest - if anyone has any details of this WILLIAMS family I would appreciate hearing from them. A Happy Christmas to everyone. Best regards ........ Ros.

    3. Hi Everyone, I'm still here :-) Could Mary Lou please email me, I lost several email addresses when I moved across to the IoW. I have mammoth backlog of email's so if anyone is waiting for a reply I apologise :-) Life is still pretty hectic and at this rate I shall need to employ a secretary and purchase a desk ( I do miss my desk). I love being in Cowes and have met so many wonderful friendly people. It has been great being able to put faces to names - and it has been lovely to meet a few members of the IoW FHS. I am hoping to meet the famous Ann Barrett in January when I attend the Ryde Social Heritage Meeting, if any listers are attending the meeting do give me a wave. I have been all over the Island several times over by now, but still love Cowes more than any other place (even if it is like a ghost town this time of year). Yarmouth comes in second and the amazing Newtown - has any other lister been to Newtown and if yes, what did you think? It has been great to talk to a lot of the older locals , they are quite often a very valuable untapped source of information. Finally - it's not too late to subscribe to the IoW FHS for Xmas and I have to give my favourite cemetery Northwood a plug - become a Friend or purchase a gift subscription for another member of the family :-) Harass Jon Matthews if you feel like a subscription to each , we can't have him twidling his thumbs ! If you are still alive Mr Urry - email me :-) Merry Christmas Everyone Angela McMurtry (17th Dec had a light dusting of snow but nothing since)

    3. Hi Ann & Cecilia, Thanks for the licence info - it's a bit early for our family I think. I have just discovered an 1828 directory which gives the inn keeper of the Vine as E. Williams! So, I guess Edward must have died between 1828 &1841. I wonder if he had any other occupation? I'm not sure which newspaper report you're referring to - the only one I've seen is the 1871 one reporting the demolition? All the best ........... Ros. 3. Thank you Cecilia & Ann, I appreciate your help. I think the "godfather" idea is probably the right one, It was also interesting to read about the Vine Inn in those 2 sources (luckily I do have the CD of the back copies of the journal.) It would seem that the old building was demolished before 1870 and Thomas Sa(u)nders transferred the name and licence to 16 Castle St. He couldn't have been there long as I have his probable death as 1871. Apparently he was also a builder and is credited with building the Victoria Arcade in Union St. Thank you, also, Roy - I have tried the IGI for Lavinia in the past with no success and have only recently become aware of the HUMBER connection. I was able to find the reference to the marriage of Edward WILLIAMS to Mary HUMBER but I could not find Sarah Humber WILLIAMS' baptism. I'm not sure where I could have gone wrong? 3. I wonder if SKS would do a look up for me at the Record Office. I would like the baptism and parents for Lavinia WILLIAMS born about 1824 in Newport, I think, and her sister, Sarah (Humber?) WILLIAMS, born about 1809. There's no rush I know everyone's busy at this time of year. Lavinia married Edward Kennet MINTER in 1845 and Sarah had a daughter that year who she named, surprisingly, Rosina Minter SANDERS. I wonder why Sarah would want to give her daughter her brother-in-law's surname? Another item of interest relates to the cover of last month's journal. In 1841 Lavinia's mother, Mary WILLIAMS, was the innkeeper of the Vine Inn then in Pier St. By 1851 Sarah's husband, Thomas SANDERS, had taken over. The 1861 census shows Thomas still the innkeeper and the Vine Inn between Sivier's Hotel & the Royal Victoria Yacht Club so I think that means that the Riviera Hotel was originally the Vine Inn?! Can anyone confirm? Best wishes ............ Ros.

There is nothing shown for Lavinia but there is a baptism of Sarah Humber Williams at Newport on 8 June 1810 (batch no. I039421). No source given but it's one of those relatively new "funny" I batch numbers. The IGI also has the marriage of EDWARD WILLIAMS and MARY HUMBER at Alverstoke (near Gosport on the mainland of Hampshire) on 10 July 1805. Given Sarah's middle name, this seems likely to have been her parents' marriage. The batch no. is M073576, source the Alverstoke parish registers. Gosport is, of course, a major naval base. 1. [IoW] Land inheritance on Isle of Wight
    2. george legge
    3. Hello to all, Does anyone know what was the local custom for land inheritance on the I.W. before the Statute of Wills in 1540. I believe that before that date, real estate (land and buildings) could not be devised or willed. Before death, as long as it was not entailed, it could be sold or given; but on death it had to be distributed according to local custom. In many counties, this was by primogeniture (all to the eldest son); in Kent it was by ultimogeniture or Borough English (all to the youngest son); in some places it was by gavelkind (distributed equally between sons); if there were no sons, it was distributed equally between daughters. But what was the custom (before 1540) on the Isle of Wight? Many of our ancestors would not have written wills and, if they did, not mentioned real estate, because it would automatically have been distributed according to local custom. Individual cases might be found in manorial records. But the actual local custom was local law and I don't know where that was recorded. Does anyone know what was the local custom? I know that everyone is busy at this time of year; but I hope one of you experts can tackle the problem when you have time. Wishing you all a joyous Christmas Season and a most successful 2010. I've assumed that it is probably (a) because it is now the sister's name or (b) a godparently relationship occurred.

    3. Hi all How would you like to have FREE access to all the 19th century GB census? No more tokens, subscriptions etc. Freecen, an international project, is aiming to do just that, a good start has already been made, there are over 15 million entries on line and increasing all the time. Hampshire itself has 120,963 (27.3%) of 1861 records available and 276,007 (45.3%) 1891 records available already. Obviously though it needs volunteers with willing fingers to help us finish the project. Can you help please. Requirements are patience, as much time as you can give and feel comfortable with, a sense of humour and willingness to learn a new and comparatively easy skill. In return you will receive a pre formatted spreadsheet, jpegs of the census pages which need copying, (although 1891 is mostly only available in microfiche format) an on line help list and contact with the coordinator for the area and a sense of achievement. Please help us with this fantastic project. If you would like to volunteer then please contact me. Now I am intrigued by the witnesses named. Her father William as a tailor is certainly as we have discovered before. I hope there are some descendants able to add to the story. Thanks again.
