    3. Hi April, I don't have these specific Morris' in my family tree, but I almost must admit I have not spent much time tracking this line, so it is definitely not complete. I have been mainly working on my Jacobs and Cooper lines. My Morris' seemed to be more in the Chillerton and Gatcombe areas, which were where the Coopers were from. My Jacob(s) were more in the Brook, Brightstone and Mottistone areas. I am including an outline of the Morris' I have. Maybe it will help this lady find another path on her Morris'. 1 John MORRIS b: August 13, 1686 in Rill Farm, Chillerton/Godshill, Isle of Wight, England d: November 14, 1764 in Godshill, Isle of Wight, England .. +Mary COOKE b: 1692 in Gatcombe, Isle of Wight, England d: October 15, 1754 in Godshill, Isle of Wight, England ........ 2 Moses MORRIS b: August 15, 1731 in Gatcombe, Isle of Wight, England d: November 11, 1794 in Godshill, Isle of Wight, England ............ +Patience YOUNG b: March 23, 1734/35 in Gatcombe, Isle of Wight, England d: September 17, 1800 in Godshill, Isle of Wight, England ................... 3 Moses MORRIS b: September 17, 1759 in Cridmore, Carisbrooke, Isle of Wight, England ....................... +Elizabeth EXTON b: 1757 ............................. 4 Selah MORRIS b: Abt. 1781 in Chillerton, Isle of Wight, England d: March 10, 1860 in Brading, Isle of Wight, England ................................. +George COOPER b: September 13, 1777 in Chillerton, Isle of Wight, England d: December 26, 1865 in Morton (Brading), Isle of Wight, England ................... 3 Micah MORRIS b: March 12, 1769 in Godshill, Isle of Wight, England d: 1837 ....................... +Hannah BAKER b: 1768 in Whitwell, Isle of Wight, England d: 1788 in Pagham, Isle of Wight, England ............................. 4 Micah (Michael) MORRIS b: October 10, 1788 in Arreton, Isle of Wight, England d: 1873 in Brading, Isle of Wight, England ................................. +Ann PITMAN b: April 20, 1794 in Thorley, Isle of Wight, England d: 1819 in Calbourne, Isle of Wight, England ............................. *2nd Wife of Micah (Michael) MORRIS: ................................. +Charlotte PARSONS b: Abt. 1801 in Brading, Isle of Wight, England Thank you, Sharon Luchsinger Valentine, Nebraska, USA -----Original Message----- From: isle-of-wight-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:isle-of-wight-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of April Sent: Friday, January 22, 2010 3:01 AM To: isle-of-wight@rootsweb.com Subject: [IoW] MORRIS FAMILY I am wanting to help a lady from Australia who has made enquiries of me as to whether the following has any connection to my MORRIS descendants. 3. Hi Anne, This maybe your relative. Found in 1861 census:-- Hampshire , St. Helens, District 15, Images 6 and 7 in the hamlet of Oakfilield. [ the page has some awkward marks that partially hide details.] Household 26 (Private House) Charles SALTER age 33 Carter ( labourer ) born Arreton , Hants, Mary " " " wife " Newchurch " Emily 10 " Eliza 8 " Ellen 6 " Thomas 4 " Charles 3 " George H. 6 months " Hope this is useful to you . The names seem to fit and Thomas would only be 4 as his birthday is in June, the census having been taken in April or March 1861. Parent's ages slightly inaccurate compared to your details but I may have read them incorrectly as the blurred marks were over the ages and places of birth. 2. April
    3. Calling all those who are researching the Scovell family Godshill, Niton etc. I have found DORA SCOVELL daughter of DANIEL SCOVELL and CLARAnee Morris. She went to New York, married there in 1916 to an Irishman David Clifford. Daughter Dora was born 1917. They were all alive and well in the 1930 census. David was 58 Mother Dora 40 and Daughter Dora was 13 years. David died Stamford, 1934 age 63. Mother Dora died 1936 (pauper) age 46 at the Connecticut Valley Hospital and is buried in their cemetery. Cannot find what happened to daughter Dora. There was an Uncle of hers over there HENRY MORRIS and his wife ROSE. Maybe they cared for Dora? Maybe she came to the Isle-of-Wight to be with her mothers family? Even took on their name? Maybe she died over there which at the moment is difficult to find. Maybe someone has been researching this family and has information. I hope so. I really do. April nee Morris. New Forest.

    2. Anne Campbell
    3. Hi, Does anyone have any information about Thomas Salter, born Isle of Wight on 2/6/1856. He emigrated as a young man (18 years) to New Zealand, and is possibly the Thomas Salter listed as a passenger on the sailing ship "Edwin Fox" to Wellington, NZ, in 1875. His parents were Charles Salter born 16/2/1829 and Mary Gatrill, on the Isle of Wight. Any assistance appreciated. Anne (NZ)

    3. Kate and list The mills in and around Newport were: 1 Clatterford Paper Mill 2 Carisbrooke Mill 3 Priory Mill (also Carisbrooke) - where the water company pumping station is 4 Tannery (now Tannery Place) 5 West Mill (junction Carisbooke and Wellington Roads) 6 Westminster Mill (Westminster Place) 7 Home Mill (junction Petticoat Lane and Mill street) 8 Towngate Mill (bottom St James Street 9 St Cross Mill (Crocker Street) 10 Mew Langton Brewery (Crocker Street) 11 Ford Mill (bottom of Pyle Street) 12 Pan Mill 14 Lower Shide Mill 15 Upper Shide Mill 16 Blackwater Mill 17 Gatcombe Mill Which I got from a free little book from the Newport Museum called The Mill Trail. It used to be available as a PDF on the Island 2000 web site, but sadly no more. If anyone's interested, I could email scans of the maps. (I've got milling connections in my Tee family tree on the Island, and descendants ended up milling in New South Wales and Illinois.) Chris

    1. Re: [IoW] MILLS Carisbrooke area
    2. Chris
    3. John and Angela My Tee family have associations with Pan Mill, Newport. John Tee (1821-1904) was the miller there, I believe the mill manager. His grandson, Frederick William Tee (1888-1925) married Beatrice Grace Drudge. However as I understand it, Fred only married once. They had one son (also Fred) who died as an infant. An earlier generation (again a John Tee) were millers at the Carisbrooke mill (the one at the bottom of Castle Street.), and then at Brixton/Brighstone. It would be interesting to find out if there are any connections. There used to be a PDF Newport mill trail walk available here: http://www.island2000.org.uk/downloads/milltrail.pdf, but it's now disappeared. (Perhaps you'll have better luck than me retrieving it from the Internet Archive.) This has led us to a family link to a gent who married (his 3rd wife) one of the Drudge family who we believe has a link to our lineage. Trying to establish which Mills were operating in 1881 at Carisbrooke as this chap lived at 19 Carisbrooke Road on the Census and was stated to be a Mill Manager. We realise there was a Westminster Mill a Pan Mill a Carisbrooke Forge Mill and a Blackwater Mill but since we do not know if any of the sites were operating as a working Mill then, we wonder if someone else does? Perhaps someone may know if there will be employment records for such a Mill - assuming it will be a Mill which is very local to Carisbrooke Road? 3. Hello, My thanks to Jon, Vanessa and Mary Lou for responding. Cass John WOODFORD died 1 April 1927 aged 81 and buried at Shalfleet 6 April. The IOW County Press 9 Apr.'27 report on the funeral named Norman PLUMBLEY as a nephew. I was not aware that he remarried to Janet HILL after the death of his 1st wife Mary Martha AMEY (died March 29 1911)but now I see that the funeral report mentions a widow. Vanessa, you may be correct in thinking the Plumley relationship is through this 2nd marriage. I have now found a Norman Plumbley born in 1896 at Calbourne from a HILLS spouse - something to delve into. Thanks again. Terence

    3. Hello Phil, I have only a peripheral connection. My ancestor Henry Rawkins married a Mary Rogers sometime before 1710, when her first child was born. Henry's father (also Henry) had taken up the lease of Quarr farm (from the Fleming owners) in 1665 and the family held the lease for the next 153 years. The above Mary Rogers is said to have come from Littletown farm, near Wooton, which is not near Godshill, though nowhere is very far on the island. There is no obvious connection, though someone may know of one. Good luck Cheers, George Legge (Melbourne, Australia)
