    3. Hi Ian Eizabeth Jane shows up on the IOWFHS Births as Jane I think. There was an older brother Geoorge Henry YOUNG (1849)who was born before parents married and then my records show Elizabeth Jane (1853) then Charles and Leonard followed by Rose (1862) Herbert (1866) and Fanny (1869). Elizabeth is there on the 1861 census aged 8 but has gone by 1871. I have noticed multiple baptisms in the family so to baptise Elizabeth age 3 at the same time as her younger brother is not unusual. 1861 records Elizabeth as being born in Carisbrook other childen being born in Chale, Shorwell and Fanny in Ryde so they obviosly moved about a bit. 1. [IoW] CAMPBELL
    2. Bev Harsh
    3. Hello list Would anyone have any information on a farmworker with surname Campbell, possibly in the Newport area, around 1911? He was Scottish so what he was doing on the IOW is anyone's guess! Probably born around 1888 but this is only a guess from other dates. I realise that this is not a lot to go on, but it is absolutely all I know about the father of my mother's half-brother. Guess I should clarify that - my mother had a half-brother, it is information on his father, surname Campbell that I seek. I know there is a soldier in the 1911 census who would fit as to age and location (IOW) but from what I have found on him I do not think it likely that he is my man. If anyone knows anything or has any ideas, I would love to hear from you as there is no one to ask! Bev

    1. [IoW] Hampshire FreeCen Project
    2. Bev
    3. Hi all Just in case anyone missed my original message sent just before Christmas here is a reminder. How would you like to have FREE access to all the 19th century GB census? No more tokens, subscriptions etc. Freecen, an international project, is aiming to do just that, a good start has already been made, there are over 15 million entries on line and increasing all the time. Hampshire itself has 120,963 (27.3%) of 1861 records available and 276,007 (45.3%) 1891 records available already. Obviously though it needs volunteers with willing fingers to help us finish the project. Can you help please. Requirements are patience, as much time as you can give and feel comfortable with, a sense of humour and willingness to learn a new and comparatively easy skill. In return you will receive a pre formatted spreadsheet, jpegs of the census pages which need copying, (although 1891 is mostly only available in microfiche format) an on line help list and contact with the coordinator for the area and a sense of achievement. Please help us with this fantastic project. If you would like to volunteer then please contact me off list on bandys@worldonline.co.uk If possible please let me know if you have access to a microfiche reader and which county/areas you are most interested in. Looking forward to hearing from you Cheers Bev Howlett Freecen Volunteer Recruitment Co-Ordinator --

    3. Hi There are some old Coast Guard Cottages in Atherfield. It was reported that a boat went down near to them quite a while back and Joey ATTRILL from Bembridge walked from his home to Atherfield to assist in the rescue. The weather it appears was bad. There is a Joey ATTRILL Memorial Walk held each year in his memory to raise funds. 3. As noted by Eve and others, my website went down last July when my isp pulled the plug, and I have yet to find it a new home. Be assured, it will return one day, so please note the url www.iowphotos.info in readiness. Although I restrict research to Island photographers (there are enough of them to cope with!), I do try to include details of any studios they may have had on the mainland. However, about 6 years ago I met up with a George Malcolmson who was researching photographers from the Gosport, Portsmouth & Southsea areas who took photographs of naval subjects. He was considering extending this to all photographers from those areas and setting up a website similar to mine, but I don't think it ever materialised. Still, it might be worth dropping George a line to ask if he knows anything about a particular photographer from those areas. George is Archivist of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum at Gosport and can be contacted at archives@rnsubmus.co.uk (see RNSM website www.rnsubmus.co.uk).
