I agree that your articulation of facts and questions could bear some improvement. However, I think I know what you mean. There are at least two major reputable sources for surname research and their origins. However, before I continue, here's a HEALTH WARNING! Do NOT pay any attention whatsoever to those commercial outfits that infest shopping malls and the Internet and purport to flog you your "family coal of arms" and a nicely framed scroll allegedly with the history of your surname. These people are charlatans and I call them "bucket shop genealogists". If all you want is something pretty to hang on the living room wall, then OK, but don't take them seriously! For one thing, there is no such thing as a family coat of arms or coat of arms for a surname, moreover I have looked at some of their surname definitions and they are frequently wrong, sometimes hilariously so! Now, I think the website you want is called "spatial literacy" and it can be found at..... http://www.spatial-literacy.org/?page_id=40 It was taken over not long ago by the National Trust. There is also a brilliant CD-ROM called "Surname Atlas" which is produced by a friend of mine, Stephen Archer. This takes all the unique names (surnames AND forenames) from the 1881 census of Britain and produces instant coloured distribution maps of any surname and where it is most strongly resident in the UK. You can have hours of fun with this CD and at 12 quid it's one of the best bargains in genealogy (and, no, I am NOT getting a cut!). Look with Google for Archer Software and you'll find it. -- Roy Stockdill Genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Sorry, sent off-list instead on on-list. Bob Hills -----Original Message----- From: Mailing Lists [mailto:bobroots.bw@btinternet.com] Sent: Friday, February 19, 2010 14:04 To: 'LiverpoolLady' Subject: RE: [IoW] Help with surname ISAACS Please Lesley, A parent search on the IGI will find the older parts of the family: Don't enter anything in the name fields, enter father as John Isaacs and mother as Ann, Region British Isles, Country England and County Hampshire/Southampton. This will show 2 generations, the later on is probably the son John who presumably also married an Ann. The Hampshire OPC site; http://www.knightroots.co.uk/ and go to the parish of Rowner (registration district of Titchfield) and you will find a lot of ISAAC/S including the ones you are interested in. Hope that helps. 3. Many thanks to the response to my plea and here is a bit more information Howard White the husband was born in Arizona, He served in the US Army, in Korea, The Pentagon, a recruiting office in Montana, Got married in Montana, When he left HQ Comlandjut, he was posted to Fort Ord in California. His wife Phylis (maiden name unknown) was of Finish extraction, and was a cheerleader. Her two children were named Daughgter Debbie (Deborah) she was born in the USA, and the son was born in Rendsburg Schleswig Holstein. and named Charles. I have tried the German records for births at the Krankenhaus in Rendsburg, but they did not keep a record of births for US military personnel. Nor could I find anything from the US Army Hospital in Bremerhaven. Any help in tracing either Howard or Phyllis, or better still both, would make a friends dream come true as they lost contact through a sudden posting whilst in the army PLEASE REPLY OFF GROUP Chris

Their website can be found at: http://www.isle-of-wight-fhs.co.uk/index.htm Another fairly simple method is to enter a very common name - John Smith, Brown, Jones, etc - into FreeBMD (www.freebmd.org.uk), choosing Isle of Wight as the registration district. Clicking on the underlined blue link named "I.Wight" will take you to other screens that give a complete list of all the places in the RD. Registration districts were used as the basis of census enumeration areas. Also look at the Isle of Wight pages at GENUKI at:- http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/HAM/IOW/ It's not difficult, really. -- Roy Stockdill Professional genealogical researcher, writer & lecturer Newbies' Guide to Genealogy & Family History: www.genuki.org.uk/gs/Newbie.html "There is only one thing in the world worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about." 3. Hello fellow listers, I have been using SKYPE for 2 years or so and I wonder if it would be a good idea for those who have it to let the List know. It makes communication so much more personal if we can see each other, and because its an Internet communication does not incurr any extra cost(if you have broadband and not call up) We use it all the time to communicate with family in the USA, Australia and England, and now I am finding fellow genealogists picking it up. I use a Logitech camera at the recommendation of my computer guru and it has been very reliable and good quality picture. Phil White in USA Roots in Sussex and Isle of Wight

    2. Kelvin Kean
    3. Phil, I and other appreciate your offer. It's the kind of thing that makes the list worthwhile. And I understand with your own surname being White, you might be subconsciously tempted to spell the name of our illustrious isle, White, but it's Wight not white in the light of the place names in Britain. Incidentally, in looking up Wight to see what antecedents it may have sprung from, it's from an Old or (pick your source) Middle English word meaning a human being, in particular a living being. And for those like me who've never played it, the fantasy game, Dungeons and Dragons, so favored by young boys, uses it as a term for a particular kind of "undead creature," whatever that is. And as to your offer, do the surnames Hibberd, Thomas, or Phillips appear among your associated family names? Those are my surnames but mostly in neighboring towns of Ventnor, Newchurch, and Wroxall.
