    3. I found the following entry Hansard 1915.  I would think any records would be held by the National Archives.    The Commission Internationale de Ravitaillement (International Commission for the Purchase of Supplies) was established in August, 1914, as a result of an agreement with the French Government, its object being to co-ordinate the purchase of food supplies, munitions of war, and military and naval equipment by the two Governments; to prevent harmful competition in the same markets and a consequent inflation of prices; to place the French Government in communication with firms who are capable of carrying out orders satisfactorily and at a reasonable price, and to spread the orders in such a way as to distribute employment, and thus accelerate delivery. The scope of the Commission has since been extended to cover purchases made on behalf of the other Allied Governments. The Commission consists of delegates of these Governments and of representatives of the Admiralty, War Office, Foreign Office, Board of Trade and Board of Agriculture.  ________________________________ From: Ros Fletcher <rosfletcher@iprimus.com.au> To: IOW Mailing List <ISLE-OF-WIGHT@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, 25 March, 2010 7:16:15 Subject: [IoW] Commission Internationale de Ravitaillement Hello All, Since the list is rather quiet at present (or am I not receiving  postings??) I wonder if I could ask a question which is not strictly  on topic? A friend of mine has an identity card which belonged to his mother.  It was issued  in January 1919 when she was 22 years old and the  organisation was called "Commission Internationale de  Ravitaillement".  There is also an address - "India Empire & Canada  Houses, Kingsway, London". I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of this organisation.  I do have  the several items available on the internet by using Google but I  would be interested to know if anyone has any other info.  Do any  records exist for instance? 3. Hi Margaret, Shirley, Angela and John I'm not aware that I've been missing any list messages, although I'm a bit busy (understatement) with a new job at present so may not have noticed. It might be worth keeping an eye on the list archive at http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/index/ISLE-OF-WIGHT/ to see if you can spot a specific message that doesn't get through to your own mailbox. It's easier for someone to look into the problem if you have specific details. Alternatively, have you checked your spam folder - I know it's been mentioned before, but it's surprising what your ISP misinterprets as spam. You may need to go into your ISP's website and log into your account in order to check this, as the filtering may be happening long before it reaches you. 3. I hope someone can explain! I have submitted requests and been very pleased to have answers from several members of the list. However, NO mailing list arrives in my in-box that contains my request! What have I done that has stopped me receiving ALL the Rootsweb messages? When the number of daily messages decreased, I thought that you had all gone onto Facebook, or twitter or something! Which of the addresses that I found in my address book is the best one for appealing for help? Certainly, isle-of-wight@rootsweb.com must have published my last request about Wolverton and Firestone as I was pleased to hear from 8 members. All assistance welcome in response to my dilemma. I have been a member of the list for 11 years, so this is a recent problem. Best wishes Shirley

    3. Is there anyone out there? Our sympathy to Shirley Mundy - to whom we have replied off List. We too feel our request for info to the IW List is not being received by everyone out there? Appealing for the List to find any links relatives and research relating to these Portsmouth (pre IOW) families has drawn a blank with just one reply from a researcher with whom we were already in touch on Attrill family. Thank you Christine Mackay - such a blessing. While we know the names were a long shot request for information - surely someone must be researching one of the names? We hope someone will receive this and get in touch? We are looking for links to (particularly) REEVES FAMILY from Portsea area who were Victor A and Annie Amelia nee TAYLOR who possible had 4 girls all B Portsmouth - Doris A -B Dec 1917 Mabel G - B June 1919 Joyce V- B March 1923 and Jessie R -B June 1926. Some of these ladies could well still be alive and have married with families in the area? Hoping to get some replies!!! 3. Hi Shirley, My WHEELER family is associated with Wolverton. In my researches I have come across 2 Wolvertons and the WHEELERS were connected to both. One is the still existing manor at Shorwell the other was a farm at Bembridge where my later WHEELER ancestors lived. I remember Firestone copse as being between Havenstreet and Fishbourne (south west of Ryde.) I do have some more info about Wolverton if you think it will help - just let me know and I will send it off list. All the best ........ Ros. 3. Hello Please would you send me the details you have of those two Williams and I might be able to cast some light on one or both that would help you. Kind regards Rod ------------------- Favour requested: If available, I would much appreciate a few moments of someone's time at the Newport Record Office before the weekend. I have been dragooned into doing a presentation this weekend on their ancestors to a sibship that are among my brother's in-laws.  (My heart is not really in it.) I am having trouble finding teenagers in the 1841 census - none I look for seem to have living parents! For a William Garnett, born 1824 in the Portsea area, I find two possibilities - a Labourer in Alton and an Upholsterer (apprentice, I think) in an upholsterer's household in West Cowes, each listed as 15. I am somewhat inclined to the second being the lad that 10 years later was an auctioneer in Portsea. I can recommend to the family concerned that they check the Newport RO card index for any mention of William Garnett's apprenticeship, but it would make a more satisfying presentation to know if there is any such indication (or a baptism in the IoW around 1824-6, which would reduce the likelihood that the lad in Cowes is the one I want). If anyone is going to the Newport Record Office before the weekend, and has enough time to check, it would be much appreciated. But not if it prevents anyone's own work, since the family concerned can do it later for themselves.

    2. John ATTRILL
    3. Hi List We have been looking for our Portsmouth rellies (there must be some somewhere out there) - these are the offspring of the line on MOREY related to us as follows: Julia Morey married Edward Oliver Smith in 1863 St Johns Church Northwood IOW. When married they resided in Cowes and prior to her nuptials Julia (sister to Great Great Grandfather Isaac Morey) had a shop in Cowes with Millinery and Fashions as the prime concerns. Her brother had a Bakery & Pastrycook business at 21 High Street Cowes across the road from her shop. Since Smith is not easy to research, we found that it took more and more time to unravel the mysteries of the liaison between Julia and Edward. They left Cowes in 1873 and returned to Portsmouth where Isaac previously lived worked and married - though he was born on the IOW. We assumed he died hence the reason they then left Cowes while other family members descendants of Isaac and Jane his late wife from Portsea - still remained in Cowes. We have now uncovered(we think and hope) the whereabouts of the families in Portsmouth area and are trying to locate anyone researching the above names from 1885 who may be connected to the families- onwards era when we know the marriages to the different children of Julia and Edward Smith began. These are their offspring with details of who we believe they wed: Caroline Julia Gleed Smith B 1865 Cowes who married George Charles Reeves at Portsea Sept Quarter 1885 Oliver Edward Smith B 1867 Cowes who married Emily nee Chivers Portsea March 1891 Quarter Annie Jane Smith B 1868 Cowes who married William Owen Middleton Portsea June 1890 Quarter Arthur Ernest Smith Born 187- Calbourne IOW (Porchfield) who married Margaret Packham 4 March 1896 Freshwater IOW William Smith Born 1873 Portsea who possibly married Alice Simmond 1899 All Saints Freshwater IOW Can anyone INTERESTED or even perhaps who may be descended from these people who is also researching these names in that era in Portsmouth district please contact. Any help to locate a living relly would be much appreciated. Thank you John & Angela _________________________________________________________________ Do you have a story that started on Hotmail? 3. Angela, I was waiting for more replies to your email dated 21 Feb. 2010 I have Thomas connections in Cowes, both East and West, the descendants of Thomas THOMAS (Tomass) born 1766 including George THOMAS (1800), Charles THOMAS (1821) and William Henry THOMAS (1854) my great grandfather, who moved off the Island to Greenwich in the 1880s. Associated names are DENNISON and LASHLEY. This branch seems associated with the building trade, George and Charles owning several properties and 'controlling' several workers.
