    3. Hello Joanne, Can you give some specific details to give a starting point.  What do you already know?  I have looked on www.familysearch.org  and saw that a baptism of Alice Bizzill gives Charles Daniel Bizzill and Martha Richardson as her parents so I am guessing that you want to know about them - or have you already got further back? From the International Geneaogical Index (IGI) on www.familysearch.org Charles Daniel Bizzill was born on 14 Jul 1824 and baptised 22 Aug 1824 at Carisbrooke, parents Jonathan and Sarah Ann.   I couldn't find Martha's baptism on the IGI.  www.freebmd.org.uk is an index of the birth marriage and death registrations from 1837.   I found the marriage of Charles and Martha Dec qtr 1847 Portsea district 7 296.  If you obtain the marriage certificate it will give the names and occupations of their fathers. www.freecen.org.uk has some census transcriptions and sometimes you can be lucky.  Charles, Martha and family are on the 1861 census.  I don't have access to any other censuses but maybe someone on the list can trace Charles and Martha back to the 1841 census. I searched on the National Archives website and there is a Royal Navy record of service for Charles Reginald Bizzill born west Cowes who I think is Charles and Martha's son (going by 1861 census). 3. Hi I am just starting on my family tree after a break of 10yrs, and admit to feeling like a 'Newbie" in family research. I am currently looking for information on the HIRTER and MANTELL familys. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. I have a Johann HIRTER married to Mildred MANTELL. Her parents were Erastus MANTELL and Elizabeth Ellen REED, and his parents were Benjamin MANTELL married to Ann CHARLES. Thank you Edelweiss

    3. According to the 1881 census on www.familysearch.org  Erastus Mantell was born Hastings, Sussex c 1845.  Elizabeth was born Ventnor, IoW c1847.  In 1881 they were resident in Brading, Hampshire.  There is a birth entry on www.Freebmd.org.uk  for Erasmus Seth MANTELL Births Jun 1845 Hastings.  The marriage of Erastus Seth MANTELL and Elizabeth Ellen REED is indexed on FreeBMD Dec 1876.  There is also another marriage indexed on FreeBMD for Erasmus Seth MANTELL Jun 1871 Axminster to either Anna APLIN or Mary Anna NEWTON.  I think this was to Mary Anna NEWTON because there is a death of Mary Anna MANTELL aged 24 registered SEP 1872 Axminster. In the 1861 census on www.Freecen.org.uk Elizabeth is with parents James REED (born c1819 Brading, Hampshire) and Amelie J REED (born c1822 Sandown, Hampshire).  James is a domestic gardener. There is a marriage registered on FreeBMD Jun 1846, I of Wight of James REED and Amelia Jane BOYCE which may be Elizabeth's parents. I haven't had any luck finding the Hirters before the marriage of Hans HIRTER and Mildred MANTELL Dec 1904 I of Wight.  Regards, Joy ________________________________ From: Eddie <eddiew39@bigpond.com> To: Isle-of-Wight@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, 16 April, 2010 22:34:18 Subject: [IoW] HIRTER, MANTELL Hi I am just starting on my family tree after a break of 10yrs, and admit to feeling like a 'Newbie" in family research. 3. My thanks to Jon for finding for me what I thought to be a family no longer on the Island and who maybe had emigrated after 1841. In fact they were still there but now the surname has changed from Hollis 1841 and then to Halliday. 1851, 1861 and 1871 census. James and Ann and all the same children living Kingstone. Can anyone please think of a reason why the surname changed. ?? Kind regards. April

    3. Could I ask for the help of listers again. Jon has kindly sent me information from the 1851 census about James HOLLIS now HALLIDAY. He has the same birth, same wife and same children living at Kingstone, I-of-W. They were all born Whippingham. James born 1806 and Ann nee Morris about 1811 and they married 7th February 1833. at Whippingham. Did this James die 1849 and Ann remarry? Kind regards. April Clark nee Morris. My grandfather born Godshill

    3. April Was James 85 when he died? That was the age of the James Hollis who died Isle of Wight in 1849. I think from your other comments James was actually born about 1806, according to the 1841 census, so I don't think this is the James in question. If it were then there is a marriage for an Ann Hollis to Maurice Silsbury in 1853 at Whippingham St Mildred, and Ann can be found in 1861 with place of birth of Whippingham. Here's a thought - there is a family recorded in the 1851 census in Kenystone or Kingstone, Whippingham (I'm not sure of the place name), called HALLIDAY, their names are James (46), Ann (45), Henry (17), Jane (16), Alfred (14), Edward (11), Albert (9), William (6) and Walter (3). Coincidence? 3. Does anyone have any info about the OWEN family in early 1800's? This is all I know about my Owen forbears:- 1) from Census details ; my Gt Gt Grandmother MARY nee OWEN was born c1825 in Carisbrook 2) from Census details ; her mother, ELEANOR, was born in Newport c1805 3) from Eleanor's Death Cert she was described as a 'Widow of THOMAS OWEN, gentleman' this last description is vague but quite tantalising, but I have failed to find any trace of Thomas, only an 'Edward Owen, Ind' in the sketchy 1841 Carisbrook census. Mary and her mother Eleanor both later settled in Norfolk, England - presumably after Thomas had died? c1850's? At present it's not easy for me to travel to research OPR in Newport so any clues would be welcome! Sue (IoWFHS Member 2904)

    2. Ros Fletcher
    3. Hello All, Since the list is rather quiet at present (or am I not receiving postings??) I wonder if I could ask a question which is not strictly on topic? A friend of mine has an identity card which belonged to his mother. It was issued in January 1919 when she was 22 years old and the organisation was called "Commission Internationale de Ravitaillement". There is also an address - "India Empire & Canada Houses, Kingsway, London". I wonder if anyone has any knowledge of this organisation. I do have the several items available on the internet by using Google but I would be interested to know if anyone has any other info. Do any records exist for instance? Best regards ........... Ros.
