Hi all, I wonder if someone can answer this question: Would the birth of an illigitmate child born in 1917 be registered under the mother's name Before being informally "adopted" by another couple? And would that couple have been able to register the birth of the child under their name Either first or after "adopting" the child? Hoping someone knows about this. I am trying to establish the birth name of my husband's MOTHER. Who was adopted by a childless couple Herbert ANTROBUS & Emily (previously HAYTER) living in Freshwater IoW and married there in 1911. Any suggestions please - we are desperate to find out. Lis Warwood Adelaide South Australia
Thank you Diana for going to the trouble of finding out about the Settlement Records -- most useful Regards Sally Malyon
Cannot remember who asked but was at IWRO today so asked the Count Archivist. He said that there are a few - Godshill, Newchurch and Newport particularly but that because of the House of Industry, which predated most workhouses by 50 years, they tend to end around 1770. Godshill and Newchurch are listed individually in the handlist to the parish records, 18th century it looked like. Those for Newport, which are presumably fairly numerous, are still in bundles of several years together but there is an alphabetical index book for them 1681 - 1774. Newchurch and Newport I noticed also have good runs of rate books and accounts in the parish records
Kokeritz (Placenames of the IW) gives Goldings Farm in Carisbrooke as Golden 1775, 1781 and Goldens 1844 'probably manorial like Goldings in Thorley' Goldings in Thorley he gives as Goldings 1608 'Probably manorial'. Local pronunciation 'gu:ldnz' Not a lot of help really!! I wonder if someone could explain the meaning of the sub-headings and content found in the Consolidated Parish Records (Lay Subsidies, Winwill, etc.). I have thi file (WOODFORD only) which I could send to anyone who is a fundi on CONPRI direct to enable them to understand what I am talking about. Are these records abbreviated notes of more substantial sources of information? a] This item (there are others on the file) is of particular interest to me as I have been trying to confirm that James Woodford had sons named John and Joseph - Benjamin is my g/grandfather and his sister Ann married a Joseph NORMAN in 1837. WOODFORD Ward 993 1871 24 June Conveyance Cottage + garden (1/2A) at Nodwell Freshwater 1) James WOODFORD of Calbourne Widower Benjamin WOODFORD of Calbourne Innkeeper Joseph WOODFORD of Cowes. Gent John WOODFORD of Calbourne. Butcher Ann WORMAN of Thorley widow 2) John EMBERLEY of Freshwater Malster William HIMMERS of Langbridge Farm Newchurch Yeoman 3) W.G. WARD of Cowes Esq. Would the 5 WOODFORD family be those recieving transfer of the property and those ;isted in 2) and 3) be those disposing of it. b) Here are the headings I would appreciate an explanation of: 1] "Lay Subsidy" -a tax paid or susidy recieved? ; 2] "Newport Terrior" - a newspaper? ; 3] "Win Wills Archdeaconary" ? 4] " Win wills Consistory" ? 5] "P.C.C. Wills" ? 6] "Win Act Book" ? 7] "WIN / SCH " ? 8] "Win Wills Cons" ? 8] "Win Admons" ? 8] "Win Cause Papers" ? The only item I know is "Ship money" which was explained on pg.3 of the IOWFHS Nov.2003 journal. A big ask I know but all bits and pieces will be appreciated. Terence
Thanks Dave, that's a great help, let's hope it's the right Sarah! The 1851 census has her, age 59 living with Cornelius and daughter Caroline at 3 Pyle Street and has her birth as Gatcombe, is that a possibility? I need to look at my map to see where Whitwell is. Regards Sally
Hello List, During the holiday period someone asked for help with Abraham(s) research - are they still interested as we may be able to help them. Lesley Abraham, Isle of Wight.
Dear Angela, I think we've corresponded before - it's been such a long time since my family name has appeared on the list. I have a copy of the book (Biddy SHEPHARD and I are 5th cousins) in fact, I wrote a review of it for the worldwide Morey Forum: Book Review The Moreys by Stacey W. Hyde "Come to meet me tonight in the gloaming, My heart yearns to meet thee alone; Come to meet me beneath the old oak trees, And list to my fond heart's rich tone. I will watch by the old orchard gate love, And count every minute that flies, With more than a lover's impatience Till thou comest to gladden my eyes." Thus wrote Henry Morey, of Carisbrooke, IOW, (email 647 02) soldier and poet, to his future bride, Alice McKnight, at the start of their courtship in 1876 and this book tells their story. Henry ran away from home aged 11, because of his stepfather's cruelty, and joined the army, the 86th Royal County Down regiment, who were stationed at the Albany Barracks, Newport, at the time. In a 30 year army career he rose to the rank of quartermaster sergeant. Alice grew up in Villierstown, a small village in County Waterford, IRL, the daughter of an estate bailiff, she had a happy childhood in the Irish countryside with her brothers and sisters. Henry moved to Ireland with his regiment where he met Alice at Fermoy. Tracing the marriage and the birth records of their 16 children (13 of whom survived to adulthood) would normally have presented a challenge to the family researcher as Henry was posted to far flung places around the world but he left many papers and, together with the reminiscences of family members, his son-in-law, Stacey Hyde, was able to write this book in 1958. It is a very well written and enjoyable account of the trials and tribulations of the family as they lived at various locations and of their successful survival at East Cowes after the early demise of Henry. Not written for publication at the time, it was edited by Henry and Alice's granddaughter, Biddy Shephard, and published, with added illustrations, last year. A second edition, including Henry's previously published poems, "Rhymes from the Ranks" is, I believe, to be published soon and will be available from alan@gsbooks.org.uk. Hi Elmo while agreeing wholeheartedly with all your proposed resolutions may I say that this list is better than most. Also re >I will not let my mailbox fill-up to the point were my ISP bounces incoming >messages. I am afraid I would have to amend the above one as I have a hotmail account and if - as it appears happened last Friday/Saturday - I receive two huge junk mail attachments then I cannot guarantee there will be room in the mailbox for the eagerly awaited IOW list digest over the Oz weekend. So I will try not to let my mailbox fill-up to the point were hotmail bounces incoming messages. And a happy and successful new year to all on this list with hopefully not too many weapons of mass distraction to quote Blair. Hello , Flicking through a back issue of Family Tree Magazine October 2003 and found the following THE MOREYS : A double Biography 1848 -1927 by Stacey W Hyde This book is based on the MOREY family . Henry Morey 1848 -1905 from the Isle Of Wight married Alice McKNIGHT ( 1857 - 1927 ) from Ireland, and they went on to have 16 children . The author was able to draw upon his own recollections as well as papers left by Harry Morey, icluding a very interesting diary which is extensively quoted, and memoried from members of the family. Book is available from Mr and Mrs A W SHEPHARD , 14 Beckford Close, Warminster, Wiltshire BA12 9LW email alan@gsbooks.org.uk Priced 12.99 (pounds) inc postage . Thought this might interest a few Angela
Greetings from Australia I'm interesting to see if any of this group have connections with the following families. Charles SMITH born about 1803 Northwood, Isle of Wight, married 1/1/1837 Northwood to Catherine KENNEY/KENNY born about 1808 Northwood.(This information found on the IGI web site.) My Great Grandfather was Charles Thomas SMITH born abt 1846 Portsmouth (found this information on his marriage certificate & different census) in 1873 at Ramsgate Kent he married Catherine Ann SUTTON, he was a widow at the time of this marriage. His father's name was Charles but was he had died before this marriage, details from marriage certificate. Several of Charles & Catherine's children names included KENNEY/KENNY, so I believe that his parents maybe the ones I listed above. If you can help me I would love to hear from you. Regards Ann SAYER New South Wales, Australia
I was interested to see the question raised about settlement certificates on the Island but have not seen any replies on List. Would be interested to know whether anyone has come across them as I too found them useful in researching other counties i.e. Essex. Thanks Sally Malyon Researching: TYLER, KEARLEY, STEPHENS, PEACH
