Hi again In the past you have all been very helpful and i was hoping that you can again. I am looking for info on a William DUFF (b1789?) married to Lucy. They had 2 children Sampson (b1819) and Harriet (b1828). I am trying to find out if they are related to a Joseph DUFF (b1805?) and if so what their fathers name was. It becomes very confusing as there are a lot of Joseph Andrews and they seem to swap them around regardless of whats on there birth, marriage and death certificates. From the info I have the family came down from Scotland to the New Forest before moving to the I.of W. Many thanks in anticipation Myra --------------------------------- Yahoo! Dear Listers, I have just reposted this request with the marriage date corrected. Hope someone can help! George ABSALOM died in about 1802 and Esther/Hester in 1796. They were married in Carisbrooke in 1752. I believe they are my 5xgrandparents. My 3xgrandfather and 2xgrandfather, both also called George were also carpenters and lived in Portsea, Hampshire. I am trying to make a definite link by finding the names, ages and occupation of other ABSALOMs on the Isle of Wight. I would be most appreciative of any assistance. Off topic but relevant to those sending in links to useful sites and hope the list administrators don't mind. How many times have you found a website that you think would benefit others, only to find that when you print the extremely long URL (address) it comes up broken due to Rootswebs system or your email programme cannot get it all in on one line? If that is the case then go to http://tinyurl.com/ and copy and paste in the URL An example of this is for our Netheravon page the url is http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~villages/wiltshire/netheravon.h tm But using Tiny URL we get the format below http://tinyurl.com/yvqjr In fact the text would be half the size but as this is in plain text then it has been changed. Jo There are quite extensive records from the Isle of Wight Workhouse (the workhouse was in the parish of Carisbrooke but is for the entire Island). You should contact the isle of Wight Record Office to see exactly what they have. You can find their details at the following url: http://www.iow.gov.uk/library/record_office/ -----Original Message----- From: Jo [mailto:jo@stumpypost.co.uk] Sent: 15 January 2004 19:23 To: ISLE-OF-WIGHT-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [IoW] Carisbrook Workhouse 1890's I wonder if anyone can help: do any records from Carisbrook workhouse exist? I am trying to trace admission information for a couple: Joseph and Dinah Eveleigh...they were in the workhouse in 1891 (aged in their 70's), and died some time in the 1890's...so maybe a death record too? They had originally come from Devon and Somerset, and their names are variously misspelt on documents ...so any help tracing IOW information about them would be wonderful. Hello listers In December I asked whether any-one had knowledge of records of the bookings made by a deckchair/boating hire Assistant in 1913 re. travel from Southampton to Melbourne, by my Grandfather and his brothers. Their journey had started in Ventnor. Valerie suggested that I write to the Longshoreman Museum, The Esplanade, Ventnor. I have just received their reply. Unfortunately, the books were destroyed many years ago. <do any records from Carisbrook workhouse exist?> The surviving Isle of Wight House of Industry (or workhouse) records are at the IW Record Office - contact them for details of holdings and research charges if you cannot visit yourself. I don't think there are admission / discharge books for that period but you may pick them up being admitted in the weekly or monthly minute books if they go up to that date. Or the catalogue to the records showing the IWRO holdings for the House of Industry may be on the A2A (Access to Archives - see PRO/National Archives) website. Although in Carisbrooke parish the House of Industry is nowhere near the village - it is at Parkhurst and is now part of St Mary's Hospital on the Newport to Cowes Road. Hi everybody, I have a couple of lookup requests which should help answer a couple of queries for me. Emma ANDREWS bn.1854 Leckford, Hants. married Charles RUSSELL on the IoW in 1873. Her fathers name was Charles, but I don't know anything else about her. Please can someone do a lookup in 1861/1871, in Hants./IoW to identify if there were any siblings and when and where her parents were born. GGGGrandfather Henry RUSSELL b 1822 Shorwell, Married Martha JAMES b 1831, on the IoW in 1849. e was still living in Shorwell and she was from Kingston at that time. Please can someone do a lookup in 1841/1851 to get any other family details and see where they were living after they married. ps If anybody requires lookups in Norfolk, please feel free to ask as I have access to Norfolk FHS archives. Phil.
Another enquiry I got this week . Can anyone help ? If yes please email me off list . Angela I have found your interest in Hollis Cowes on the IoW web site. My family seems to have lived there until the 1880s when they moved to Kent. I have traced them back to the 18 century but have got mixed up because they all use the same Christian names. Charles William, William and James feature. The family I am interested in maried into the Mouncher family, another island name.
