    3. Anybody with ancestors in 'Newchurch' needs to be very clear on what they are talking about. Newchurch is a village in the middle of the Island but historically the parish stretched from the north coast of the Island - so included Ryde - to the south coast of the Island - so included Ventnor. And don't confuse the ecclesiastical parish with the civil parish. If you are using census records do check whether it is the civil parish that is Newchurch - if so check where else it is. 3. Dear Andrea, Ian and all, My gggrandfather Joseph MOREY b.1797, Carisbrooke, left the Isle and went to London. I recently discovered a marriage in 1827 at St Marylebone parish church between a Joseph MOREY and Maria HOBBS, unfortunately the parish register entry is unhelpful stating they were 'of the pariih'. I believe this is Joseph's marriage, the date and place are about right My gggrandmother, Maria MOREY is enumerated in the censuses as being born in Gloucester and the ages would give a birth date of 1796/7. Is Maria connected to HOBBS on the Isle, perhaps she moved there? Bit of a longshot but I would be grateful for any help. Regards, Mike Morey Streatham, London

    3. Gabi commented... >I would like to find out about Newchurch. Can anyone tell me if I am >correct in believing that Newchurch did not survive the Wars. I'm not sure to which "wars" you refer. Many have occurred since the parish at Newchurch, All Saints, was established in the 11th century. In fact a charming aspect of a visit is to see a well maintained sign near the entrance listing all the vicars since the founding of the parish. Interestingly, all the vicars from that founding through the early 16th century bore French names, telling us a bit about the culture of the times. But be that as it may, the parish is still there and thriving! I'm from the U. S., but I visited it during the summer of 2002 and, as it happened the congregation was preparing for their annual Festival of Flowers (I think that was what they called it). The interior was festooned with flowers of all kinds and the church ladies were busy adding more. >If so are there records available. I met the current vicar, a friend of a friend (for me at least) from Canada, and had lovely chat with him. He showed me all the records that church has now, but they only go back to the early part of the 19th century, if my memory serves me correctly, and are incomplete at that. I believe older records can be had at the IOW Record Office in Newport, I think. Perhaps, someone with more immediate knowledge of the IOW will give better information. >In addition, does it have a cemetary? There probably is a cemetery, but I saw none and sought none, since my own relations are buried in a cemetery in Ventnor, three or four miles to the south. Kelvin Kean Elverson, Pennsylvania US

    1. [IoW] Re.Headstones for George & Esther ABSALOM
    2. Hello Rhoda If the burials of your ABSALOM's were listed as Newport, they would most like have been at the Church Litten Burial Ground in the centre of Newport. This site was cleared and converted for use as a Park in 1955. I do have a list of the memorials, which I will check to see whether your family are listed. I also have two pages from the local newspaper about it, including a picture, which I can send a copy of. If you are interested, contact me off-list. best wishes, Ann Barrett. 3. <headstones in Newport 1802 and 1796> Very unlikely as the old graveyard in use at that time - Church Litten - has its headstones removed and is now a public park. The IW Record Office may have information on whether headstones were recorded. 3. Hello Listers, after going back to researching my Grandmothers side of the family, we would be interested to know if anyone on the list has Eliza DORE b. 1820 at Niton, looks to be illegitimate as only the mothers name Mary is given, no fathers name.Eliza married John Hobbs about 1836 and we have just traced nine children, what involves the House of Industry and six of the children dying, a tale that wouldn't be lost from the pages of a Katherine Cookson novel, or that what it seems to us. 1. [IoW] Re. Cemetery Help
    2. Hello Mary Lou Your Simeon ABBOTT was buried in Fairlee Municipal Cemetery at Newport. I have looked at the Burial Order and Receipt book, of which I will send details offline, from that I found the grave was not purchased in perpetuity, so a stone could not be erected. Just to make certain that it wasn't purchased at a later date, I checked with the staff at the crematorium, who confirm there was no stone. best wishes, Ann http://members.lycos.co.uk/s0uthbury/

    3. Hi Mary Lou It is most likely Newport cemetery, rather than Northwood, or Carisbrooke. The Isle of Wight Council manages the cemeteries on the Island: Ashey cemetery, Binstead cemetery, Carisbrooke cemetery, East Cowes cemetery, Newport cemetery, Northwood cemetery, Ryde cemetery, Sandown cemetery, Shanklin cemetery St. Paul's cemetery, Ventnor cemetery, Wroxall cemetery. You could write to; Bereavement Services Isle of Wight Crematorium Station Lane Whippingham East Cowes PO32 6NJ Tel: 01983 882288 Fax:: 01983 883010 Bereavement Services is in the IW Council Department/Directorate of finance and information > trading standards > bereavement services. The Bereavement Services Officer is Malcolm Houghton. If you are patient, someone local, like myself, could do it for you. I am in the process of recording all the M.I. in the Ryde Cemetery, but I don't know if anyone has already done the Newport cemetery. I could do it when I next take a day off, which won't be for a week or so.
