    1. [IoW] Kingswell, Joyce and possibly Martin
    2. Hi Listers I see there have been a few posts about KINGSWELL recently. I am at an early stage of research on my Isle of Wight connection and I wonder if anyone can help me. According to information gleaned from family members, my GG grandparents were William JOYCE and Jane KINGSWELL. I only know about Jane being a Kingswell from some notes left by my great aunt. So far I have been unable to find a record of this marriage, although there is a William Joyce marrying a Jane MARTIN in 1869 in Ryde, and I am wondering if this is the couple I am looking for and perhaps there was some mistake about Kingswell being Jane's surname. Could it have been her mother's maiden name instead? The information I have so far about them is: 1. According to my great aunt, they lived in Myrtle Cottage, Nelson Road, Ryde, although they may previously have lived in Winchester. Apparently Jane had some relatives in Wales. Their children included Frederick Ernest Joyce (my great grandfather), Leonard (the youngest son), another son, and daughters Annie and Minnie. Minnie married someone called Walter and, after she died, Annie married him! 3. On the 1881 census there is a family, which I think may be the right one, living at 42 Union Road, Ryde and comprising: William Joyce, aged 30, born in Ventnor and working as a fly driver Jane Joyce, wife of the above, aged 34, born in Ventnor Minnie Joyce, daughter, aged 11 William Joyce, son, aged 6 Charles Joyce, son, aged 1 Anne Joyce, daughter, aged 3 4. Frederick Ernest Joyce was born in Ryde in 1882 (according to the IGI, but I do not have his birth certificate) and died in 1924 in London. He married Ellen CULL, originally from Fawley in Hampshire, in Ryde in 1905. 5. Jane Joyce died in 1916, supposedly aged 64, although this differs from her age on the 1881 census. I understand that she was buried in Ryde cemetery, but I don't know whether there is a headstone there. 6. Ellen CULL was a Congregationalist, so perhaps the Joyce family were as well? Can anyone throw any light on the origins of either William Joyce or his wife Jane (Kingswell?) Many thanks for any help you can give. Regards Lindsay Mohindra

    3. Shirley Sorry you got no replies to your earlier mails, though it was unclear what you were really after (I had no information to offer anyway). In several of the cases mentioned (post 1837) I suggest that with the references you have, presumably obtained through the IOW FHS index, that you obtain copies of the appropriate certificates from the IOW Registrar (the IOW FHS web provides a template and all contact details) which will then hopefully provide the additional details, such as father's names/occupations, potentially witnesses and in some cases the exact place of marriage that will help you progress your family tree. We have communicated about the Kingswells before, and know that we are directly related, since your 5 Great Grandfather is also my 6*Great Grandfather. My 4* Great Grandmother is Hannah Kingswell, daughter of William Kingswell (1760-1793). But her details are somewhat sketchy, as I have been unable to conclusively identify her christening. She did however marry Edward BARNES in 1800 in Shalfleet and went on to have (at least) 11 children, before she died in 1856 (probably of exhaustion, though she would probably have been 76 years old). Their 8th child, Hannah Barnes (1818-1885) is my 3*Great Grandmother and married William RYALL in 1838 (Carisbrooke). I'd be interested to learn more about the ancestry of William Kingswell, since like you this is one of my direct lines. 3. After a hectic couple of years I’m back to hunting down my Meader Ancestors.. I’m particularly looking for information of the origins of Susannah Meader, Wife of John Meader, who lived in both Cowes and Ryde. The 1881 Census shows her as coming from Illogan in Cornwall. Together with John.. (Well I think so *L*) she had several children… some of whom I’ve managed to track down.. others I haven’t So any information on the following would be really useful… John Meader Dec 4th 1847 (Born in Emsworth according to 1881 Census) Susannah Meader 1850 Elizabeth 1852 James 1853 Mary 1855 Sarah 1856 Merina 1862 Henry 1867 Many thanks in advance for any information Steve Beazley. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. 1. [IoW] CONVICTS ON "RODNEY" 1850
    2. Julie Robinson
    3. Hello All, Thank you to the several persons who wrote with suggestions over how I might determine from my list of 312 names of convicts transported on "Rodney" in 1850 who were the "Parkhurst Boys". I learned that there is an index to selected prison registers; the person offering this information was writing from WA but I believe that such an index would be available in the National Archives at Kew. Five names from this Index matched with my names on HO 11/16. The boys were not convicted on the Isle of Wight, but they were serving in Parkhurst at the time of collection by "Rodney". Their names were: Richard Arnold Henry Beaumont Thomas Bennett Robert Brady Patrick Brannon In time, I may discern more. I would recommend "Criminal Ancestors - A Guide to Historical Criminal Records in England and Wales" by D.T. Hawkings. Regards, Julie
